OS Dear Miss M, Maybe you could help me see through a relationship dilemma. I have been seeing this guy off and on for about a year. We have never actually established the rules of our relationship, but that has never really been a problem. The problem is that sometimes he does or says things that are really insensitive towards me. He even seemed to ask out my friend in front of me. I dont want to put pressure on the relationship by asking for exclusivity, but I feel like he is either ignoring or oblivious to my feelings. What should I do? - The invisible girl Dear Invisible Girl, If you have established a pattern of behavior with this guy, it might be hard to change the structure of the relationship. Because you never established rules, you never let him know what your limits are. It sounds like you two either need to have a very long talk, or just be friends. Being sexually involved with him can make or break a friendship, which seems to be the extent of your established relationship. If you want a deeper relationship with him, talk to him. If his feelings are the same then you can discuss the situations where he has made you feel invincible, and hu.rt your feelings. If this does not sound like an appealing option, stop sleeping with him, and start opening your eyes to the world of single and nice men that are available. E-m- ail Nurses Week To Come in May ANA Press Release - The contribution of Americas 2.7 million registered nurses, in saving lives and improving the health of millions of individuals, will be the focus of National Nurses Week, May f- ill Nurses: Your Voice, Your Health, Your Life is the theme for 2004, which will recognize nurses by drawing special attention to nurse staffing issues. More registered nurses (RNs) on staff is the key to both healthier patients and more satisfied nurses. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there will be a shortage of more than 275,000 RNs by 2010. Inappropriate nurse staffing is the number one concern of nurses today, said ANA (American Nurses Association) President Barbara A. Blakeney. A growing body of research, including studies by -the Institute of Medicine in 2003, in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002 and by ANA in 2000 underscored the link between nurse staffing, quality of patient care and patient outcomes. For that reason, ANA is strongly supporting the RN Safe Staffing Act, which was introduced by Sen. Daniel Inouye during National Nurses Week 2003. IN Jp i , 111 I . t .t I?- 4 1H t Companion legislation in the U.S House of Representatives, the Quality Nursing Care Act, was introduced by Rep. Lois Capps, an RN, in Dec. 2003. Pending legislation in Congress would amend the conditions of parucipation for hospitals in the Medicare program to require minimum nurse staffing rados. Rather than mandaung a specific numeric rado, the bills would require developing a staffing system that ensures a number of RNs on each shift and in each unit of the hospital to ensure appropriate staffing levels for patient care. Development of these staffing systems would require the input of direct-car- e RNs, decision-makers the at the bedside. The measure also would require the public reporting of nurse staffing informadon and would provide whistleblower protections for nurses who speak out about patient care issues.- - This legislation needed to help improve the work environment for nurses, Blakeney said. It will help in recruiting new nurses into the profession and help retain those nurses already practicing, she added. National Nurses Week (also known as Nadonal Nurses Day) is celebrated throughout the United States beginning May fi .through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing as a modern profession. Traditionally, Nadonal Nurses Week is devoted to highlighdng the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health is care. From bedside nursing in care hospitals and long-terfacilides to the halls of research institudons, state legislatures and Congress, the depth and breadth of nursing profession is meedng the expanding health care needs of American society.
