For thousands of years people have been celebrating different holidays and festivals at the end of October. ; The Celts called this cele- bration Samhain (prodefined nounced sow-inas all Hollowride, meaning the feast of the dead, signaling the close of harvest and the initiation of the winter ), Westminster looks to create a new tradition this Thursday when students draw together in the Payne Gym for a pep rally in support of the athletic teams. The event, which will get started with an intra-teascrimmage from the womens basketball team at 6:30 p.m., is the first of its kind for the season, lasting till May. To further the tradition of costumes and faeries and bring a close of one season and an opening of another, Westminster is throwing a Halloween party and dance. You can expect to have lots of fun, in the form of music, dancing, food, punch and two cash bars. Costumes arc a must (recommended, but optional) and there will be prizes for the best costumes. The cost is $5 or $3 with a can of food as a donation to help Utahs foodbanks. ' The Halloween dance this year will be downtown at the Hilton Hotel on West Temple and 255 South from 9 p.m. to 1 m col-leg- e. Headed by Athletics ('hairs Jared Turner and Rachel Miranda, the rally was not easy to coordinate. The pair also alongside ASWC Vice President Megan Hardy on the project. The new event underwent numerous changes in the organization-process including the recent change of being pushed back on the calendar. The event was originally to coincide with Become a True Griffin Night, which is taking place tonight. However, Hardy said this is all part of bringing a new7 tradition to the college. In addition to the womens team scrimmage, students can expect to see scrimmages from the metis teams as well as a slam dunk contest. The rally will also feature a performance by the dance club and recognition for other teams in the athletic program. Also available will be tickets to the third installment in the Matrix series, The Matrix: Revolution. The tickets will cost $5, but are limited to one per student. The evening before the pep rally, students can participate in Become a True Griffin Night. The actual ceremony will take place at midnight, bur students are invited to come at 1 1:45 p.m. when ASWC will be serving hot chocolate. Often perceived around campus as a giant make-out ses- sion, Become a True Griffin. Night has become an infamous, annual event for Westminster. Its kind of a tradition here,. Hardy said. In order to become a true Griffin, students will gather at midnight and each student will -- place their hand on the Griffin statue outside the Shaw Center. Kids Club Halloween Party Is Ghoulishly Good Time Hillarie Browning Staff Writer Witches, devils, princesses and animals of every kind had a ghoulishly good time Saturday during the annual Westminster childrens Halloween party, sponsored by ASWC. Kids from all across the valley came to Behnken Hall to decorate pumpkins, create headstones, and have their face painted while dining on sugary Halloween treats. ? Craig Jacobs, of Murray, brings his grandchildren to the event every year. They always have fun here at Westminster, and theyre excited to leave with a huge bag of stuff. The children werent the only ones excited about the holiday. Many Westminster students caught the spirit of and showered candy-givin- g with small chocolates and treats. Nearly .20 rooms in Behnken, Ohvell and Stock Hall participated in the event. Seniors Crystal Pratt, Jessica Dickey and Sarah Brown put forth several trick-or-treate- rs months of planning and work into their clever set up in Olwell 202. The roommates turned their entire entry way into a Lord of the Rings fantasy world.
