As the end of September neats, the MLBs possible postseason picture has become somewhat clear. I have skipped numerous classes to stay home and watch televised baseball games, and spent countless hours reading box scores material to produce the online rather than researching school-relate- d by Aaron Thompsons slanted article, ASWC Senate Meeting Reaps hlinimal Benefit published in the September 17 issue of the Forum. Printing this article in the opinion section does not excuse the slanderous material it contains. First and foremost, I would like to point out that Thompson clearly had a personal motivation for attacking ASWC. Thompson allowed his grudge against certain members of the executive cabinet and the senate to skew his interpretation of the events at the senate meeting. :: following information. In the American League East, the New York Yankees are unsurprisingly in control of the division, while the offensively blessed Boston Red Sox are six games back. The Red Sox do however possess a good enough record to currently be the frontrunners in the American League Wild Card race.: Erratic Toronto sits In the middle while usual bottom feeders Baltimore and Tampa Bay prepare to watch the postseason on television. Over in the AL Central, surging Minnesota winners of nine of its last 10 has overtaken the Chicago WTiite Sox for the division lead. The faltering W'hite Sox are now tied with Kansas City for sec-- .; ond place, and both teams are five and a half games behind Minnesota. The Cleveland Indians sit 20.5 games back, so they are - To my knowledge, Thompson never approached a senator to confirm any of the assumptions he draws in this article and therefore he has made claims that are unwarranted and untrue. Specifically, I resent Aaron THomspons implication that the senators are somehow puppets of the executive cabinet. ASWC President Ana Fonua in no way carefully planted the motion to approve the IMA budget. Fonua frequently addresses Estrada during senate meetings because he is our parliamentarian there was nothing conspiratorial going on here. Senators Estrada and Mangone are both competent senators who were well informed of the factors contributing to the budget committees decision and made the motion of their own volition. If I may take a brief moment to address the issue of the IMA budget: Sometimes the senate simply : cannot give every club the full I - Tuesday Deadline to apply for May and August 2004 grad uation WSPA Ac. If Thompson had ' bothered to contact a member of the Senate Budget Committee or ASWC Treasurer Brady Smith for a comment before writing this article, he might have been See Letter, pg. 8 left still wishirtg for the hokey plot of Major League: to someday come true. Cleveland can be thankful for the Detroit Tigers, who, at 38 wins and 117 losses, are attracting much attention to the possibility that they can surpass the 1962 New York Mets MLB record for most losses in a season. In the AL West, Oakland and Seattle are vying for the division crown. Seattle currently sits three games behind 2002 AL West winner Oakland, and wo games behind Boston in the Wild Card race, ; Last years World Series champs Anaheim have not been able to recapture last years magic and are fighting with spunky Texas for sole ; possession of third place in the leagues West Division. The storyline: in the National League has been slightly more dramatic than in the AL, with a' furious fight for the NL Wild Card. The Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers Philadelphia Phillies, and the second place team from the NL Central are all vying for this coveted playoff spot Atlanta and San Francisco, with the best records in the NL, are competing for the homefleld advantage. The NL East has belonged to the Atlanta Braves since April, and they had the best record in baseball for most of the season (until the New York Yankees went on a late surge). Florida, Montreal and Philadelphia all sit well behind Atlanta, though all three are still contending for the Wild Card. Montreal doesnt really have a chance though, as they are five games out in the NL Wild Card race.: That .: other New York team, the Mets, have, been wondering about next y All-Stbreak. year since well before the The NL Central has been baseballs biggest story (since Minnesota recently ran away with the AL Central) as the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and St Louis Cardinals all fight for the division crown. The Cardinals have faded as of late, while the Astros V and the Cubs jockey for position. Currently, the Astros have a half: game lead on those lovable losers, the Cubs. Repeat offenders Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Milwaukee have, been out of the postseason hunt since the early summer. Over in the NL West, San Francisco, behind the bat of future Hall of.Famer Barry Bonds, has been in cruise control for most of the season. Offensively inept Los Angeles sits 14 games back, and is struggling at four and a half games back In the NL Wild Card race. The Arizona Diamondbacks need some sort of divine intervention to! occur to make the playoffs, while Colorado and San Diego are (and have been) bringing up the rear. Baseball is all about the magic of October the postseason, This regular season has. been a roller coaster ride thus far, and the: best part is that it is still going in the form of the pennant and Wild Card races. For avid baseball fans, it has been a season to remember whether your team is winning or not. With only a little over a week left in the leagues regular Season schedule, the remaining games will be full of enough action, drama and suspense to make me forget why I am really in college in the first place.
