Salt Lake City UT 84105 oj Volume XXXVI Issue 3 Diversity Series Documentary Opens Eyes Kristen Reber of five families from differing Staff Writer 4 Elaine Shen from Active Voice introduced the upcoming PBS miniseries, The New Americans and kicked off the 4 Keybank Cultural 2003-200- Diversity Series in Gore Auditorium on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Shen spoke briefly, as she allowed the documentary The New Americans to do most of the talking. Students and faculty had the privilege of watching a sneak preview of the new film, will not be broadcasted until April 2004 on PBS. To give a sense of her purpose, Shen only momentarily introduced herself and the goal of her organization. Active Voice, she said, uses powerful documentary films as the basis for campaigns that inspire participants to positive action civic engagement, volunteerism and coalition building. The New Americans is one such film; used to promote homelands for three, years, showing every emotion, hardship and happiness granted them. However, much of that hardship occurs once they arrive in the U.S., Shen said. It allows us to feel for these people, because we know things are not always so great here for immigrants, Shen said. Youre left feeling like you want to help. She hopes that is what The New Americans does provide a degree of understanding and acceptance for those immigrating to the United States. After the film was shown, Shen offered to answer questions and encouraged feedback on the film. Overwhelmingly, students commented on how they enjoyed the film and felt moved by the opportunity Americans take for granted. Unfortunately, the climbing club never came to fruition, but perhaps the presence of the new' bouldering wall will spark interest once again, said Green.
