Salt Lake City, UT 84105 Defense Leads Griffins to Jason Long Staff Writer The Westminster womens basketball team hosted the annual Westminster Fall Classic basketball tournament with six teams from three different conferences playing three games over the weekend. The Griffins won two of their three games to better their record to 2 in five games this season. The tournament, which featured three nationally ranked teams, was extremely competitive from its start on Thursday to its final game on Saturday night. On 3-- Thursday, the Griffins faced Albertson College from Caldwell, Idaho. Albertson, who is ranked No. 27 overall in NAIA Division II,' beat Westminster in their only . contest last season. However, this year has been a lot different than last for the Lady Griffins. The Griffins came out with a lot of fire defensively in front of a great crowd to set the tone early and held Albertson College to 23 points with 14 turnovers. On the flip side, the Griffins were only able to shoot 29 percent from the field themselves. By halftime, Westminster held a one point advantage, 24-2- 3. The second half began just like the first with Westminster playing great defense, but the difference in the half was the Griffins shooting. Midway through the half, the Lady Griffins went on a flurry with Jessica Richter connecting on three triples and capitalized by a fast break by Lindsey lay-u- p Kelly from Shelly Price opening up a nine-poi- nt lead. The Griffins never looked back as they won the game easily by a score The Griffins of 67-4were paced by a balanced attack with Rebekah Steenblik leading the way 7. 2-- 1 Volume XXXV Issue 11 Weekend with 18 points while Rachel Robbins had her best game of the year scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds. After the game, Coach Daron Park emphasized his teams defensive efforts, When we compete like that on defense and hold teams below 50 points, we will always win. That was the key tonight. On Friday, the Griffins faced a very athletic Fresno Pacific squad who also is regarded highly on the national level as they are ranked No. 27 in the latest NAIA Division I polls. Again, the Lady Griffins were able to get out to a great start jumping on the Sunbirds 12-From there, the Sunbirds went to a zone defense trying to slow the Westminster offense.
