Show November 22, 1994 the forum to the EUMdDtr Waldholtz. One thing I can say in Enids favor she sure is an eloquent speaker. Wait until she actually has to back up her rhetoric with something concrete. It will be fun to watch her flounder. What was most amazing to me about election day was the discontent present in America. Discontent over what? Statistics show that election results on television, I was actually ashamed to be a Utahn. I was ashamed by the fact that we could turn a woman as successful and brilliant as Karen Shepherd out of office. Of course, Utah has always seemed a little behind the rest of the pack to me... In 1992, President Clinton ended up third in total number of votes here. I dont call this being a forerunner; I just call this being ignorant. Anyway, back to Mrs. Shepherd. In her two years of Congress, she was acknowledged by members of both parties for her courageous stand on various controversial issues. She received the 1994 Grace Caucus Award from Citizens Against Government Waste. She led the way in a bill to ban gifts given to members Chimpsky. I am confident that this is written exactly how I want it to a pear. Let me begin, again, by saying that when the major point of a Forum article, not to mention a letter to the editor, is grammar errors it just makes me sic. However, when an apostrophes missing even I find it bothersome. Even more irksome, though, an incomplete sentence. You know whos really bother me. Oops, I meant to say You know, whos really bother You me. Or more accurately know, whos really bother me. And I know exactly whos fault it is. grammatical errors almost makes me want to correct the sentence I just wrote. In fact, Im almost fed up enough to not even write this letter. Let me at least give you fair warning that if you want sub- - stance to do yourself a favor and stop reading now. One thing you can bet on is that in if a letter to the editor I am critical of the Forum (which is really just a glorified scandal sheet) then any of my errors will be pionted sic out to make me look stupid. So, a note to the editor is in order: please print this letter verbatim. I wrote it in consultation with deceased author of On the Road, Jack Choreic, I ran it through the spellcheck, and it has been proofread by famous linguist, Nim Dear Editor: was built Yes, the library does not on the weekends. late stay open Soon these problems will change. A new library is in the planning stages and is currently the g camfocus of a capital paign. But, the negative attitudes of some Westminster students and staff toward the library perpetuates, in part I think, because of a misunderstanding of how limited the librarys resources are and how much the library has to offer. On the down side, the library is not open late on weekends because Westminster cannot pay staff to be there. The library doesnt have an information desk because there are no resources to set one up and, the computers and copier stay broken down because the computers dont get fixed and the copier is as old as Methuselah (in copier years). Because of Westminsters recent financial troubles the administration seems to have ignored the business students and connections through the Internet with state and national libraries. A new computer database will soon be available which will allow students to download the full text of some magazine articles through their computers. Some of these services are expensive, but help students to do research quicker and easier. Before working at the library, I had no idea how many periodicals and current books are available. It is true that the University of Utah and BYU are better funded and have more of everything but that doesnt mean that the Westminster library is not worthwhile. This is a small institution with limited resources and I am thrilled to see a project (the new library) which will directly benefit student Dear Editor: would just like to say Hooray! to Fred Fogos article on the recent elections of 1994. As an active member of the I minority Democratic party, I thought I would just refrain from writing a response to the elections and accept defeat quietly. But, Mr. Fogos article prompted me to express my anxiousness over what occurred that infamous Tuesday, November 8. On this day, Republicans all but took over the nation by winning majorities in both the House and the Senate. While watching the To the Editor: Let me begin by saying that it infuriates me that the Forum would print a letter which is as trivial as the one you are now reading. The fact that so much of the discussion in the Forum centers on the lack of substance and It seems to be common knowledge at Westminster College that its library is second rate. I often hear complaints from staff and students about the quality of the library and its staff. When I first attended Westminster I also had a negative impression of the library. That impression has changed and I have become annoyed with those who are complaining. I have worked for six months as a work-stud- y student at the and learned that the Ive library old axiom dont judge a book by its cover stands true for our library. Yes, the pea green shelving and utilitarian decor have not changed since the 60s when it . fund-raisin- ' of Congress from lobbyists and passed an amendment to secure federal funding for the Salt Lake Gang Task Force. Taking a stand against a pay raise, she returned $500,000 to the U.S. Treasury in order to lower the national deficit. Mrs. Shepherd was even cited by the New York Times November 15, 1993 edition as one of the most valuable members of the freshman class... And what do we do as payment for her services? We kick her out of office and replace her with Enid library. For many years, Westminster has relied on telling its students that since the library here is really not that great, just go to the University of Utah. These are the positive things. The administration has known for a couple of years that accreditation of the college requires them to upgrade the library and they are planning to do it. I have witnessed the daily procession of new books which are Filling the librarys shelves and the effort the librarians are making to serve patrons. limited funding, the library provides students with computer indexes for nursing and Despite unemployment is down, the biggest cut in our deficit occurred in the last two years, and the crime rate is stable. It seems that at times of national prosperity, we tend to bitch the most. Go figure! But, two years, after the Republicans have failed in their bid to make the country a perfect place to live (and they will), the Democrats will be standing right there, ready to take the lead. And when that Contract With America falls flat on its Republican face, well be right there with active solutions to problems and not just empty promises. Sincerely Jim Martin President Westminster College Democrats there will be (and I promise) a happy ending to this nightmare. In It is Dr. Seuss whos done more to undermine the communicability of our children than Abbott and Costello and e. e. cummings put together. Personally comma I think every sentence should have the proper punctuation period However, it is okay with me if the punctuation . is in the middle What really disconcerts me is when a sentence no verb. So far, everything I have said up to and including this point is true except for possibly the sentence you are now reading. Let me just add that any errors in this letter were made by the editorial staff and I am already preparing my rebuttal. Im pissed, pardon my French. In just the last sentense of my letter three errers were made. Sincerely Bill Bynum Instructor studies. However, I am disappointed that I will not see the new library before I graduate. Perhaps the administration could pitch in for a few new chairs and tables at the old facility while we wait for the new one? Probably not, but I would be satisfied to at least hear less complaining about the library. The library does not dictate how much money the administration gives them. The most they can do is ask and more often than not they dont receive. So, fellow students, give the library a chance. The librarians are doing the best they can to make it worth your time.
