Show Local interest the forum Dukin it out: Hatch vs. Shea - - by Terresa Newport Forum Staff writer Orrin Hatch is once again running for another six year term, this time against Pat Shea. The debate held at Cottonwood High School last Wednesday, Oct. 19 left viewers with no unanswered questions. Unless, of course, your question dealt with women in the priesthood. Both candidates reacted to the question of women in the priesthood with passion and, in essence, acknowledged it as viable by responding. Hatch much done so Ive responded, for women and neither of us run our respective churches speeches, and Shea saying he wished the popes policy would change but that change doesnt happen like a light switch. The debate was reminiscent of an older and more nostalgic debate in that it was clearly a race between a Republican and a Democrat. No blurry party lines or independent ideologies, a treat for the straight-tickvoter. One of the hottest questions was education. Hatch insists that . et Utah has no problem with education. We do a good job, we just have too many kids, he said, to chuckles and boos in the audience but then tried to save himself with too many kids for the money we spend. Shea related a personal account of a time when his child was approaching school age and the prospective teacher suggested that Shea enter his child in private school. The teacher suggested that public school was little more than custodial care. Shea has since taken a wealth of criticism for that statement but his point remains that Utah education is lacking in political solidarity. Another hot topic was health care reform. Hatch feels that his recently passed bill on vitamin supplements is the answer. Sheas response was that if one hasnt eaten in a week and a half, a shot of 2 isnt going to fill the void. Gun control was another topic for debate. Hatch said, gun control is like prohibition, it would leave only the rich and crooked with arms and leave the average Joe without protection. Shea said he would have supported the Brady Bill and the newly devised crime bill. The debate was broadcast via TV and radio which demanded cooperation from the audience. Syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson warned the audience on many occasions to keep quiet and refrain from applauding. However, they continued to one from God to his Hatch teacher Mrs. Rigby. Utah of on the morality brought and how he was prepared to protect Utah values from outside influence. Shea also urged Utahns to celebrate diversity and register to vote. fourth-grad- ut by Johna Devey Brems Forum Staff Writer e Effective Jan. 1, 1995 the Beehive State will be smoke-freMore than 8,500 businesses recently received yellow reminder postcards informing them about the new law that e. came from the 1994 Legislatures passage of House Bill 50.
