Show Arts & Entertainment Commonplace (but theyre not) play Club Starrz Local band Commonplace headlined at Club Starrz, 300 W. 740 S., on Saturday, April 10. They have a sound which has earned them a certain following locally as well as outside of Utah as a result of their fall West Coast tour. This was Commonplaces first time playset since the the release of ing an d CD last year. They only their played two songs from their CD during this show. It took them a year to write a new set, said Jason Bringard, drummer for the band, also a Westminster sophomore. (Bringard was not only playing new songs, but was playing a new DW drum set, and he was also wearing blue plaid boxers.) He said their songwriting technique consists of one person coming to practice with a guitar part which they all wprk on and add to. Laura Jones, lyricist and vocalist, finishes a song with her vocals. . Their sound is best described as a power sound, even though the power is not blatant; it is the understated sort Effects and discord are used, but not relied upon. But without fail, the songs erupt into the same large, large sound. A couple of standout songs of the night were Carnival and Mahogany. Mahogany has the sound of a song that would receive airplay, and it has the staying power to remind you of some significant occurrence in your life. Commonplace ended their show in an encore performance, a favorite song from their CD, Lie to Myself. from The opening band, Ford Prefect, is a three-piec- e Sandy. They have a muted sound with barely audible vocals for a composite that reminds me of some of The Cures mellower stuff. Vocalist Mike Holly said that one of their main influences is Velvet Underground. He said they play covers for fun, but that they mostly write their own songs. He also said hes not vegetarian, as are drummer Brandon Willardsen and bassist Kevin Kiemanj , n in my this time Ididnt have to pay to see Commonplace role as reporter.
