All-Distri- ct All-Americ- ans Another "Beauty" By Disney: A Classic Fairy Tale, Beauty And The Beast by Kerry Gisler Forum contributing writer Stunning animation, outstanding songs and delightful new characters all come together in Walt Disneys Beauty and the Beast Set in 1 8th century France, it is the story of Belle (Paige OHara), a young woman who escapes the provincial life by reading books and dreaming of finding a prince in disguise. When Belles father, a bumbling inventor, gets lost in the forest and seeks refuge in a castle, he is taken prisoner by a horrible Beast (Robby Benson). Belle seeks out her father and arranges with the Beast to take her fathers place with the understanding that she may never leave the castle. With the help of the castles enchanted a mantle clock, a teapot and a staff Belle and the candelabra, among others beast become friends. Taking over three years, nearly 600 animators, artists and technicians, and comprising ovcramillion drawings and 226 ,000 individually-painte- d cells, this thirtieth installment of animated film by Disney is one of the most momentous achievements yet in film animation. The real beginnings of the film occurred over 40 years ago when Walt Disney wanted to find a way to bring this story to the screen. However, the original story was not to Disneys liking and the project was dropped. (In the original, Belles father sends her back to the Beast and she very passively follows her fathers instructions.) Producer Don Hahn said, We felt we need to energize the story by creating more dramatic scenarios and making our heroine move things forward by valiantly going to the castle on her own to fight for her fathers release. Further differences from this film compared to other productions of it are the enchanted objects for the staff and the internal struggle with the Beast to overcome his horrible nature. The songs for the film were written by team of the Academy Award-winnin- g Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. After completing their work on The Little Mermaid, they started writing songs for this project. They had significant input on the production. PCHSA Dedicated To Improving Life noon and 2:15. Utah!! Animation screenplay writer Linda Woolverton said, Howard (Ashman) taught me that the moments for songs are when the characters just have to burst into song. The numbers range from a catchy, cheerful song, Be Our Guest, to a powerful, operatic tune, The Mob Song. The title song, which occurs in the visually-stunnin- g ballroom dance scene, is sung by four-tim- e Tony winner Angela Lansbury. The film also employs state-of-the-- art Westminster Appears Safe ...
