Show to Problem Solution is the Only Recycling Editor: I am writing in response to Ryan Smiths letter in the February 13 edition of the Forum. First of all, I want to say that I strongly agree that plastic is a very pressingproblemin our landfills. However, the largest am ount of space i n thi s cou ntry s landfills is occupied by recyclable paper. Paper is made from trees. When they are alive, trees extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen which, to most of the animals on this planet, is absolutely essential to survival. Dead, in the form of wood and paper, trees only take up space in landfills and may take more than thirty years to begin to break down. Bleached paper also contains dioxin, a byproduct of the bleaching process that is the EPA states is as dangerous as plutonium, and treats is in the same way. Dioxin easily migrates into liquid and soil where it may remain indefinitely converti ng our sanitary landfills to toxic waste dumps. We have all heard the effects of the massive global deforestation and accumulation of waste that is taking place on this planet. Paper production is costly, both environmentally, and economically. So are wooden swizzle sticks, which Mr. Smith suggested as an alternative to plastic. Americans throw away enough wood and paper each year to heat five million homes for two hundred years. I would like to suggest that instead of replacing all the plastic in the cafeteria with paper, replace c or ceramic it with reusable plates and glass, or recycled paper and Simply constructing recycled plastic. everything of biodegradable materials is not enough because, as studies show, they do not degrade as they were naturally designed to do in landfills. We must recycle at all levels, home, work, and school. This brings me to my second point: the recycling of aluminum cans on campus. Mr. Smith, in his letter stated that recycling aluminum cans is not enough, and he is right. However, one must crawl before one can walk. I think that he unintentionally The aim of belittled the project. to help our is Westminster Recycling environment by recycling aluminum and using the money to buy and plant trees on the campus. East billion people in third-worl- d year Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire American Airlines fleet 71 time enough to rebuild all of the commercial airplanes in the United States every three months! Even with a new awareness of the benefits of recycling, Americans still throw away more than fifty percent of recyclable aluminum. Westminster College generates an average of 3,400 cans per month Spring semester, and 6,000 cans per month Fall semester. If only half of these were recycled more than $35 would be raised each month. That is enough to buy 10 saplings each month!! This year, people in the United States will earn about $700 million by recycling used aluminum beverage cans. Doesnt it make sense for us to cash in on our own resource that we are currently discarding as worthless? It is very easy to help. Simply throw your aluminum cans in the red COKE barrels on campus, and your other garbage in the garbage cans. Obviously recycling aluminum is not the ultimate answer to our environmental problems, but it is a terrible waste to carelessly throw away a such a potentially valuable energy source. We all realize that produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, they more needs to be done. The success of the provide habitat for animals, and shade on a hot day.
