"Tire guests are not to disclose it even to their spouse or companion, because one of them might be the murderer." When all the guests have arrived, dressed in costumes befitting their roles and the period, they are served a full course English dinner, prepared by one of Salt Lakes renowned chefs. McMichael-Spackma- n The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has gone through myriad changes in the last 20 or so years. Band members have come and gone, and consequently the band's style has run the gamut from folk to pop to country. Even so, until now one constant has remained: the Dirt Band's founder, John McEucn. Unfortunately, the crowd was painfully small; enthusiastic, but very, very small 100 at the most in a club that regularly accomodates 300. From here the band stint at Harrahs in Lake begins a Tahoe. Despite the size of the audience, McEucn and company gave an astonishingly good show. The night was a trip down memory lane. New songs, old songs, folk songs, blues songs: they ranged through their preferred genres with equal virtuosity. "Buy for Me the Rain" was a sweet bit of nostalgia and "The Orange Blossom Special" demonstrated that McEuens fiddling is still fine. His resounding rendition of "Diggy, and on a good day Diggy Lo" could only be matched by that of Doug Kershaw, which is no shame; it's Kershaw's song. The surprise strength of The Runaway Express lay in the added attraction of a great saxophone player. Thats right folks, you read it right: a saxophone in a bluegrass band. See what you missed? McEuen has taken on an exciting new career sans Dirt Band. He said he really enjoyed playing and traveling around with two-wee- 4 Forum the guys for 20 years, but then discovered that the bus had a back door. In an impromptu interview following the concert, McEucn admitted, "Its tough doing concerts alone; it's almost like starting over again." Good luck to John McEucn, musician extraordinaire and one helluva nice man.
