"All great endeavors begin with a dream.. .Of all things precious to mankind, freedom to dream is the ultimate value." Those are the words of the late William Gore, and the philosophy which caused the Gore Building to materialize. The presentation of the new building was given by Mrs. Vieve Gore, the wife of the late William Gore. Her speech stressed . the importance of never ceasing to dream "even on company time." She proudly introduced her children and commended the support with which they have endowed their family and Westminster. Concerning the building honored in her name, Gore said she hoped students will "use, respect, love, and benefit from it" Gore then went on to praise her daughter, Ginger for her tremendous effort involved in the building. Gore commended her daughter saying only a "true champion" could complete a project of this size. Ginger Geovale, a class of '65 alumna In mathematics, was humbled by her mothers remarks and stressed the fact that all people involved made the building a reality. Members of her "team" included: M. Stransky, architect, R. Howa of Howa Construction, Vieve Gore, Ed Sweeney, the Dean and faculty of the Gore School of Business, and Lisa Harper. Harper is an employee of W. L. Gore and Associates. She served as liaison between the Gores and Westminster. Harper was distinguished with an award from Westminster College for her outstanding efforts through to the completion of the building. Giovale hopes, the building will express the words and philosophies of her fa dier. The spirit of the entrepreneur and the philosophy of the dream have been threaded into the curriculum to imply the Gore-Gioval- e, essence of the way Bill Gore ran his business and his life. Sen. Jake Garn echoed the sentiments of other speakers at the dedication when he spoke of optimism and growth. Gam said, "Hardly anybody knows how important Westminster is to this community." Mayor Palmer DePaulis also commented on watching Westminster "grow in the face of great obstacles." President Charles H. Dick of Westminster introduced each speaker and also gave a speech entitled "Westminster College: At the Crossroads." Dick said Westminster has put the Gore philosophy into practice to overcome hard times, Westminster has repaid outstanding debts of 35 years and continues to gain financial strength. The crossroad Dick spoke of challenged Westminster to continue its dreams, or remain stagnant. Dick said the building "dedicated today is the first of Westminster's big dreams." Dick's plans for growth will continue to expand with the school. for Dr. Steven Baar, academic affairs and dean of the faculty, said the building will raise the expectations of both students and faculty. He also stated that the respect and reputation of the Gore family will carry over and create a positive message to the community. Baar went on to say that all students at Westminster can have "confidence in their choice of an educational Investment." Baar concluded by saying the building is a "comforting symbol of the Gores deep involvement with the school." Dr. Charles Ehiri, dean of the Gore School of Business, also spoke at the dedication. The dedication ceremony concluded with the cutting of the ribbon and the unveiling of the bronze plaque In the building foyer. An engraving on the facade of the building was also unveiled bearing the name of Geovale.
