They prioritize the goals in different areas. Mrs. DePaulis said, (The Mayor) is really taking a good look at where we are and what we can do to plan strategically. . , The Salt Lake Tommorrow Program has six major goals within the following areas: economic development, human resource development, government capacity, neighborhood, leadership and downtown. . DePaulis plans on spending the greatest portion of his time in the downtown area of Salt Lake City, creating an atmosphere conducive to the growth of other businesses. He wishes to prepare for the growth tht he thinks is going to return. His is going to try to revitalize and upgrade areas of neighborhoods that have deteriorated. Work has already been started in the Sugar-hous- e area, but more work is needed in surrounding areas. re-elect- ed In response to a question about the transient problem in Salt Lake City, the Mayor said the numbers range somewhere between 600 and 1,000 people. It varies with the seasons. There tends to be a lesser amount of street people in the winter. Theres more women, children and famiies than weve ever seen before, said DePaulis. Its been the hobo style in the past. Not anymore. A program is under way to provide a shelter for these people. The Mayor is trying to provide a permanent location where the people can get help 24 hours a day, whether for health, pregnancies, education, job service, food stamps, or whatever. The location of the shelter is set for Rio Grande St. and 200 S. Mrs. DePaulis hasnt disagreed with the mayor on anything substantial about his poli-ic- s yet. Sometimes we disagree on approach, but we never disagree on issues. She helped the Mayor put together his first campaign two years ago from the front porch of their house when DePaulis was elected to succeed Ted Wilson. Mike and I worked together. But this time I havent done a thing. Ive been in a position at work that has prevented me from doing any- thing, said Mrs. DePaulis. Mrs. DePaulis is a psychiatric nurse. Women tend to suffer from the queen bee syndrome, where men think women have too much support, or that theyre networking more than they should. Men tend to look at women as more competitive. Actually, women are harder on other women. We need to look out for each other. We should be better professional examples, and alert women to other available opportunities, she said. Another workshop entitled Intimacy was conducted by Dr. Carlfred Broderick, professor of sociology at the University of Southern California. too much, according to Ambassador On October 30, approximately 3,000 Utah women participated in the third annual Utah Women's Conference, sponsored by Senator Orrin Hatch. Utah is a most fitting place for such a conference, said Hatch during the days opening ceremonies. Utah is a state of firsts, with many historic women politicians, he added. The morning started off with a keynote address by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Crowded to capacity in Symphony Hall, women listened as Kissinger spoke of foreign policy issues. Kissinger said he met with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev a year ago for a long talk. The general secretary asked me how I, who had worked so hard for arms reductions, could be questioning arms control now, Kissinger said. I replied, There are three kinds of people in America: those who want an agreement no matter what the consequences, those who oppose an agreement no matter what, and those like myself, who want an agreement, but one that makes a difference. Gorbachev was the protege of the former head of the KBG. Gorbachev has never held a job outside of the Community Party. His wife, while smiling and wearing nice dresses, teaches Marxist-Leninisat the university. If anyone thinks Gobachev is a dove, well, all I can say is for the first time in the worlds history, the leaders of the two superpowers are former actors. The rest of the d ay was filled with workshops dealing with womens roles in marriage, the home, and the workforce. During the workshop entitled Working in a Mans and a Womans World, Kristine Strachan, professor of law at the University of Utah, said, Some men think women work for the luxuries. Its our obligation to pursuade them that these assumptions are incorrect. Women need to raise their sons differently if women are to continue to climb. The new breed of woman needs a husband that will take an equal position one who is supportive and will share responsibilities. 4 For intimacy to be mutually satisfying, it must consist of trust, openness, and judgement. The main cause of divorces today is the intersection of disappointment and the ease of getting a divorce, he said. Senator Hatchs wife, Elaine, hosted the afternooon closing session.
