Show edaGoraalc sen nes; Dear Editor, QapniSes SmiteiM Editorial Reply The editorial contents of the Oct. 17 issue of the Forum have some students questioning the intent and pertinence of the subject matters. Two of these concerned students are Merri Lee Barton and Kathy Schultz, treasurer and president, respectively, of the Associated Students of Westminster college Addressing first the matter of which Barton writes, some vague wording of the editorial unintentionally misdirected the focus. The material was written as an editorial designed to highlight the apparently misplaced voting priorities of the Westminster student body. Although the nature of an editorial allows for criticism of specific problems, policies, and people, the Forum editorial only means to examine the issue of voter apathy, not denigrate efforts or characters of participants in ASWC in the performance of official duties. In response to the questions raised by Schultzs constitutency, several issues need to be addressed. Treasurer Resents insinuations The letter, published under the headline of Homosexual Brethern Concern Saints, was mailed to the Forum office. No date appeared on the letter. What exactly is a Social Butterfly? I am writing in reference to the article entitled. Forum Votes for ASWC Royalty, in the fourth issue of the Forum. As a member of the ASWC Executive Cabinet and a participant in the homecoming court, I took offense to the insinuations and remarks made. The letter expressed opinions contrary to those indicated by some students and Westminsters individualized approach to the AIDS problem (see Student On The Street and Westminster Individualizes Policy") in the same issue. It was the intention of the Forum to present the letter so that the students would be offered a viewpoint on the situation (of AIDS and its contagiousness) from another source. Regretfully, there is a problem here at Westminster with having enough people willing or able to get involved in student govern The Forum has no knowledge of whether or not the individuals whose names were signed to the letter have any direct ties to the Westminster community, but does not feel that this is a prerequisite for publication of pertinent letters to the editor. Several questions have been brought to me concerning the open letter printed on the editorial page in the Forum on October 17, 1986. The replies are to clarify the Forums intent and defend its right to publish con- ment, 1 feel all participants in ASWC student government deserve more credit than being referred to as social butterflies" or refreshment suppliers. If I am mistaken in my interpretations of the above mentioned article, please clarify what the intentions were. Sincerely, Merri Lee Barton ASWC Treasurer Saints Letter Concerns Schultz Dear Editor: Was the letter submitted to the Forum ? If what was the date the letter was written? If not, where was the letter taken from? 1. so, 2. Are any of the undersigned involved with the Westminster College community? Several people have asked how the letter pertains to the Westminster student body. Thank you for addressing these questions. Sincerely, Kathy Schultz ASWC President trary views. Karin Jaffa Forum Editor Letter Proves To Be Fraud In the Oct 17 issue of the Forum, a letter to the editor was printed which was allegedly signed by Blake Ostler and Greg I. Alvord. The following week Mr. Ostler contacted the Forum to say that he had not written or signed the letter and that neither he nor Mr. Alvord were members of Saints Concerned," the organization whose name appeared on the stationary on which the letter was typed. According to Mr. Ostler, no such organization actually exists and the other 21 people whose names appeared on the letter ala) had no knowledge of it Therefore, the viewpoints expressed in the letter should not be construed as belonging to those whose names appeared beneath it The Forum apologizes to those named.
