Baer most recently received the University of MissouriNational Press Photographers AssociationNikon World Understanding Award for his coverage of the story, Vietnam: The Battle Comes Home. This award is given to a living photographer whose work most exemplifies the common purposes of mankind. "I have chosen a most unique psychological disorder to probe and illustrate with my its markcamera how a war of our most and minds the ings upon doorposts recent warriors, said Baer in regards to his Viet Nam collection. ed Gary Fitzer, dean of students, helped arrange the visit and has scheduled various open blocks of time throughout the week to allow flexibility. "The intent is to allow students and faculty accessibility to the distinguished resident, said Fitzer. "We have set aside blocks of time for open photography sessions, where anyone interested can join Baer in shooting photographs and making prints. These sessions are set for Tuesday Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.; Thursday Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.; and Friday Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.-- l p.m. According to Fitzer everyone is encouraged to take the opportunity to visit andor work with Baer. Baer hs worked for National Geographic Society, Hanna Barbera Enterprises, U.S. Information Agency, TV Guide, Forbes, People, Newsweek, Fortune, Architectural Digest, and Parade, just to name a few. While acting as Director of Photographic Services at the University of Louisville, Baer 1-- 4-- gained recognition for his photographs docug in Eastmenting the ravages of ern Kentucky. These photographs, shown at the 1965 National Governors Conference, were instrumental in the passage of tougher stripmining legislation. From 1966 to 1971, Baer was a staff photographer for the Cincinnati Post. In 1971 Baer started his career as a freelance photographer which has taken him all over the continental United States, as well as Japan, Korea, Alaska, Panama and the Caribstrip-minin- bean. The Distinguished Residents Program, under the supervision of Dr. Allan Kuusisto, academic vice president, was reorganized this year. Each of the deans of the college are responsible for a distinguished resident The idea, explained Kuusisto, is a brief, but intensive stay. Some very interesting people will be our guests. People who will stimulate our intellectual lives. According to Kuusisto, the Distinguished Resident Program was set up in 1979 and has been supported financially by Wilbert Gore, an alum of Westminster. "These residents will be accessible to anyone interested in their Field of expertise," explains Kuusisto. Also Monday Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., Baer will speak at Westminsters Veterans Program in front of Converse Hall (east side). He will be the guest speaker at various classes on campus during the week. The exhibit will be open only during the lecture on Monday, the scheduled class times, and during the Thursday Nov. 14 faculty tea. ' v .
