Editor Says Players Absences Enhance Season ! t by Danny Thiros A large majority of sports enthusiasts are attempting to make a transformation from spectator to sport critic. There are, however, a to consider: a sport critic few should be familiar with hisher sport and know all the facts, knowledge of the inverted pyramid style, writing skills and dont open your mouth unless you know both sides of the story. This transformation I am referring to is slowly infiltrating the uneducated sport fan of Westminster. Mike Woodford voluntarily re-- i signed from the soccer team. Woodford declined from accompanying the soccer team on a road trip for personal reasons unattributed to injury or illness. Woodford is an Academic All Ame-- I rican not an Athletic All American, class- room performance and athletic performance are not related. Freshman Bill Hurley also quit voluntarily for personal reasons. Hurley had other obligations besides soccer and wanted to devote more time to his studies and job. Hurley also felt as though he was not receiving adequate playing es ! f I I I . I1 .time. Coach Dorich asked Otto Max to return for the 1985 soccer season. Max declined the invithis year tation. Steve Lowe will "red-shidue to an ankle injury which he sustained earlier in the year. Lowe did mention, however, tht he will participate next year. The absence of these players has enhanced this soccer season. Freshmen Angelo Vitale, Wes Shadow and John Scanlan have proved to be more than adequate replacements. These Freshmen along with veterans Mike Peacock, Tom Ross, Carlos Vorher and Todd Coyle have produced a winning team just shy of a .500 season and a team which has competed against and defeated NCAA schools. Do Woodford, Hurley and Max have a legitimate case? Is Dorich a jerk? Are their personality conflicts? All of these are questions that we as sport fans need to ask ourselves. Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects why dont we look at the positive aspects: Westminsters soccer team has a chance rt , rs Netter sets ball for follow-u- p play Intramural Volleyball Serious Fun5 by Bill Godwin Standing outside Payne Gymnasium you can hear the rhythmic thonk thonk as the volleyball is lobbed back and forth over the net in generally hih lazy arcs. When one team or another misses the volley the cadence is interrupted, punctuated by the referees shrill whistle and Intramural Director Eric Krenzs calling out of the latest score in true town crier fashion. All of this is followed by a healthy round of applause with a few whoops and hollers thrown in for good measure. It sounds like a pretty good audience. Sounds can be deceiving. Sure theres a volleyball game, thats kind of hard to mistake, but upon entering the gym you find that aside from the few players drifting in and out waiting for their match there are virtually no spectators watching the game. All of that noise is coming from whatever team happened to score last The applause just sounds big because it is amplified and multiplied as it reverberates tnrough the almost empty gym. Nobody seems to be particularly worried that there isnt any audience. If anybody does show up just to watch they have to sit on the floor. None of the bleachers are pulled out Intramural volleyball is not after all, a spectator sport It is a participation sport and more people are participating than ever before. This year there are nine teams (approximately 90 people) competing for- - the coveted intramural champion shirts. Last year there were only four teams. There are up to 10 people to a team. Each team can play six players at a time and are required to always have at least two female players on the court. Most teams frequently rotate players to give everyone a chance to play. A team can play with as few as four players. Due to the relatively low ceiling in the gym there can be some wild vollies in the course of an intramural volleyball game. Bank shots from the rafters and even the basketball backboard are not uncommon and are all fair as long as they dont occur while the ball is going over the net These folks are in this for some serious fun, as evidenced by team names such as the Sex Machines, the Misfits and Jerrys Kids to name a few. Some of these teams are not new to the intramural volleyball program. One team to keep an eye on is the All Stars. According to team manager Philip Johanson the All Stars have taken the intramural championship for the past couple of years and hope to perpetuate the dynasty with another victory this year. Between the All Stars and this years championship are si few teams that show some competitive promise. A couple of teams to watch for are Jerrys Kids and N.A.A. Nabil Abdulla, manager of N.A.A. said that one of his motives for forming a team this year was a desire to challenge the All Stars. According to Krenz the main purpose of the intramural program is to give everyone an opportunity to come out to play and have fun. Judging from what can be heard while standing outside the gym it sounds like it works. of being ranked in the top twenty for NAIA schools, Westminster has defeated NCAA schools, and this is undoubtedly the best team in Westminsters soccer history. This is not to say, however, that there are no problems. Sure there are problems but those problems are slowly diminishing. Every soccer player who I spoke with is happy with Dorich and this years season and have high expectations for next years season with Dorich. I dont feel as though Woodford, Hurley and Max have a legitimate Bitch. The concensus shows that the soccer players are content under Dorich. One would have to think that their negative attitude is present because Athletics takes a of their status as certain amount of dedication and hard work and, most importantly, discipline. At times athletes need to take constructive criticism; this requires humility, humility is something that cant be taught. If an athlete doesnt have these traits then heshe should not participate. Westminsters record is somewhat misleading to the spectator. Westminster has played several NCAA Division 1 schools which are nationally raked. Westminster is a NAIA District 7 school, NAIA schools dont normally participate against NCAA schools. Westminsters soccer budget is virtually this budget deficit doesnt allow or compensate the coaches to offer scholarships. Virtually every school which Westminster has played offers scholarships... scholarships which are hand fed and delivered to foreign players. Westminster is playing NCAA schools to bring some exposure to the soccer program. Exposure which someday will enhance and produce a winning season. Coach Dorich is limited to recruiting Utah players only. Utah players which have little or no high school coaching in fundamentals of the game. The continued efforts by Dorich and hard work from the soccer team will someday lead to a winning season. This process will be accelerated only with the support of the faculty and students. non-existe- c:cc:.x:gasclb::q CAN PUT YOU $20,200 eLOcSEl TO COLLECT.
