Popich has taught philosophy, religion and ethics classes at Westminster since coming here in 1981. Popich, a native of West Virginia, received his bachelors degree from the University of Scranton in 1968; also the year that Popich. an avid tennis player, received the Eastern College Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Award. Popich had been accepted into medical school but he instead opted to accept a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. He received his masters degree there in 197U. He received a teaching fellowship at State University of New York at Binghamton, and tausrht there for some years. Hung on the walls of his office are reminders of a year spent living with the Turkana, an East African tribe. Batiks, water bottles made from gourds and a small wooden stand that, Popich strongly believes in the values of the courses that he teaches.People who have been exposed to ethical theory can make more informed choices throughout their lives. When you are exposed to more than one point of view at least you can have a broader base in which to make choices, he said. Popich has studied classical Greek, German, Kiswhili and Navajo, and speaks French and Latin. He did field work in linguistics while in Popich says, is used by the elders of the tribe to preserve their elaborate hairstyles when they are lying down, all show his great interest in Africa; hes been back twice since he left in Africa. 1979 and hopes to return again. LJ Popich has written several papers and has several more in progress. He is presently working on a book which deals with the status of theories of artifical intelligence for computers. It doesnt make sense to try to apply the same set of standards to the behavioral sciences that you do to the physical sciences. People just dont behave like individual particles of matter, said Popich. A theory that Popich believes his research will support is that the behavioral sciences, which many scientists dont consider to be legitimate sciences, are indeed legitimate when judged by the proper criteria. Hiking Trails Near SLC Continued from page 6 Little Cottonwood Canyon is the next canyon south (with Snowbird and Alta ski resorts). This is a steep canyon and most of the trails are steeper than trails found in other canyons. However, White Pine and Red Pine Trails are not too strenouous. Each trail begins and ends at the same place. The effects of avalanche slides can be seen along this trail which leads through aspen groves and ends at Red Pine Lake. Above this is Upper Red Pine Lake which has many fresh water shrimp and large trout. About a mile across the ridge to the east is White Pine Lake. Farther away from the Wasatch front and also very pretty are Park City, Heber and the Cascade Springs. These are found up Parleys Canyon. Heber is southeast from Park City. Cascade Springs are ancient beau- tiful mountain springs covering a few acres in the Alpine Scenic Loop west of Heber, It is easier to reach these springs by going through Provo Canyon past Sundance Ski Resort. Hikers may also enjoy the Timpanogas Mountain in this area. The information provided here is from the Wasatch Mountain Club. Anyone interested in joining the club can meet them for hikes on Saturday morning at nine at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon or contact Nanci Boyd. .
