But before the snow falls and everyone pulls out their skies, theres still plenty to do and see in the mountains. This time of year is particularly good for getting into the mountains because of the autumn coloring and cooler temperatures. There are several trails right along the Wasatch front that are good for hiking, picnics or just studying. There are several trails up Mill Creek Canyon, which is not too far from Westminster. (It is the first canyon south of Parleys CanThe Church yon, Peak Trail has a gradual climb and is only two miles long. Once at the top of Grandeur Peak there is an excellent view of the Salt Lake valley. This is a fun trail for moonlight hikes. It can be found a couple of miles up Mill Creek Canyon at the Church Fork picnic grounds. Another trail up this same canyon is the Bowman Fork Trail. It passes through two springs and follows a stream through lush vegetation. The trail is three miles to Gobblers Knob where an old miners cabin sits. Interestingly enough, the name Gobblers Knob came from the turkeys which the mine owners raided in the area. There are no turkeys now, though, the bobcats ate them. This stop affords a good view of the mountains. Fork-Grande- ur f K i Another mile further takes the hiker to Mt. Raymond at 9,400 feet This trail can be found at the south turnabout of Terraces Campground in Mill Creek Canyon. The next canyon south from Mill Creek is Big Cottonwood Canyon, known for Solitude and Brighton ski resorts. Broads Fork Trail leads all the way to three different peaks: Twin Peaks (the second highest peak on the Wasatch front). Dromedary Peak, and Sunrise Peak (a very ambitious climb which has a lot of exposure). This trail is slightly harder than the two trails in Mill Creek because ol the steepness and the length of it, but this trail exposes some of the most magnificent senery in the Wasatch range. There are streams, wildlife (including rattlesnakes), spires, peaks, meadows, valleys, and dense forests along this trail.
