Show vacation season in America is to open. The tide of transcontinental tourist travel has already set in. Evry visitor is a potential THE A interrogation point. Thats what hes traveling for to see new regions, and to learn things of interest and value about the sections through which his route takes him. Every progressive community meets these wants with booklets, pamphlets, "literature of various kinds. Fine, as far as it goes! I But there is a better way of imparting such information. What a tourist reads in a guidebook: does not make a lasting impression f on his mind. What he learns in intelligent conversation and personal contact with residents "who know, fixes itself in his memory and is I I associated ever after with pleasant recollections. ' No part of America is richer, in historic and natural interest than this. Salt Lake has been well described as one of, the four American cities itnat have "a soul. Cap our own people give the reason, for this distinction? Can they explain our uniqueness? Can they enumerate I 3. ouif. special claims to world notice J not in a spirit of vainglorious boosting hut in the calm, convincing manner of men i who believe what they say and know what they are talking about? -- How many of them can tell the granger anything about the. geological phenomenon known as the Wasatch fault? Or can enlighten him about such landmarks as . Ensign or .Tirnpanogos, -- it x;x Twin Peaks or Nebo? Or can give the size of Great Salt Lake, its percentage of salt, its islands, the rivers that flow into it? Or can point out the canyon down which the early immigrants came into this valley, or the canyon from which the Temple granite was taken, and how it was brought in? Or can explain the prehistoric Lake Bonneville and show its wonderful shore line? Or can say when Fort Douglas was established, where Camp Floyd was situated, where the world famous mines of Utah are. located and what metals they yield? Or can direct the inquirer to the site of the Old Fort, Or Memory Park, or the Hot Springs? l V No one tourist will be likely in a single conversation to ask about all these things. But every one is sure to want to know about some of them. How delighted we should be if able accurately and at once to answer these and a multitude of similar questions! How many of us are able right now and off hand to do it? We wonder. Self-educati- along these lines on $ is one of our most pressing personal needs. Lets brush up a little in knowledge as to 'oiir own city and commonwealth. It will help us immensely, will add to our reputation, will give heartiness to our hospitality. Only as we have faith in our own good fortune in living here, can we cause . others to have faith in it also.
