Advertisements bearing this or similar statements are commonplace In the west. Over the last 20 years most of us have achieved a level of Income or made sacrifices that allowed purchases of cabin sifes, camping trailers, boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles or other recreational equipment. In every instance we justify our purchase to more fully utilize some natural resource for a personal benefit. As an example, a drive outfit allows most people greater access to Natural Resource Lands Hunting and fishing areas, camping, touring or just getting away from it all. All of these activities amount to an invasion of wildland habitats where wildlife secret themselves in order to reproduce and rear their young. Not so many years ago when there were fewer people visiting wildlands, these recreating activities were just an occasional disturbance to wildlife. However, today with the hordes of people that utilize wildlands, recreation amounts to widescale harassment in most instances unintentional of wildlife. Roads, camping sites, backpackers, mountain home subdivisions and other recreational disturbances can be found on every ridge, canyon floor or hillside. Where can wildlife retreat to for the secrecy that they require? Roads, camp grounds and cabin sites all physically remove large acreages of wildland habitaf. Additional habitat surrounding these facilities becomes unavailable to many species of wildlife due to the constant disturbance at or near such sites. How many hundreds of miles of roads lace our surrounding mountains? Every mile of 16 foot wide road in our wildlands destroys about two acres of wildlife habitat. In the instance of elk, a significant reduction in their use of habitats f to one mile from roads or other recreating sites can be measured. All of this amounts to reduction in wildlife numbers. one-hal- Mountain home subdivisions, cabin sites and campgrounds serve as hubs from which wildlands are deteriorated, wildlife harassed and numbers of wildlife ultimately reduced. Over 28,000 acres of wildlands surrounding the Carbon-Emerarea are being offered for sale as recreational housing sites. Sadly, many of these land schemes are in violation of county ordinances, state laws or both. y Most of the surrounding counties require a minimum of ten acres In areas outside of a municipality to build a home or cabin; some require as many as 40 acres as a minimum. In all instances, State Board of Health regulations must be met. Experience and history shows that many sites are being subdivided into plots as small as a city building lot. Watersheds are being polluted with human waste and some so called recreational housing sites are taking on the appearance of the local dump. Is this really the best investment you can make for our natural resources, and especially the wildlife resource? Most of us are somewhat Interested In wildlife. Many for the purpose of sport hunting and fishing; some for trapping to aquire various furs to sell, and still others for photography or just casual observation. As a result, we tend to support recreational activities that put us in closer proximity to wildlife thus enhancing the opportunity to observe and experience the wildlife resource. Those who are financially capable, purchase a cabin and choose to live on wildlands surrounded by wildlife during as much of the their garbage can atyear as possible. tracts the neighboring black bear and a wandering coyote kills their chickens. A conservation officer Is summoned to remove the offending wildlife. A doe and her fawn inadvertently trim the ornamental shrubs and a beaver felled an aspen fhat provided shade. Again fhe conservation officer is demanded to remove nuisance wildlife. Yes, we all love wildlife and should do our part to provide for future generations.
