It will be an exciting, proud and unforgettable day In the lives of millions of youngsters and their families. Each of us remembers this day in our own life. For it brought recognition of achievement and a time to say goodbye to many friends and familiar surroundings. This years graduates will these same feelings and they will move on to meet the challenge and the opportunities of the world before them. Today mans sum of knowledge and applications of it move ahead at an unprecedented pace, so graduation exercises now as never before mark not an end but a beginning. Young people must keep with them always, as a way of life, the habit of learning and growing that took them through their years of education. If they keep this as the most important lesson learned in school, the world will be theirs to shape. LIFESAVING A newspaper carries the account of a girl who was stepping her car at an intersection. It was rammed from behind by another car whose driver had allegedly been drinking. Her car was shoved into the main highway where it was hit by a truck and she was killed. Following national surveys on excessive cigarette smoking and its relation to deaths by cancer, people are urged to change their smoking habits to protect their own lives. As a lifesaving measure, individuals should watch their driving habits meticulously, not only to protect themselves, but also other persons on the streets and highways. If is is of national importance to fight cancer deaths by not smoking, it is even more imperative to fight highway deaths by not drinking, because death is just as positive from either cause. But with auto deaths the innocent too often suffer. THAT WORD PLEASE Americans can never be called people. It has been estimated that we pay more than ten million dollars every year in toll charges in order to add the polite word please to our telegrams. Before Using Any Pesticide Read the Label! That i3 the slogan of the safe-us- e project for 1964. The motivating force behind this project is the National Agricultural Chemicals Association. And a distinguished list of other organizations, such as the National Safety Council and the Department of Agriculture, are cooperating. The campaign is a big one, involving bro-- 1 chures, program aids, TV spots and news-- 1 films, and radio features. It is directed to all rural young people, all parents in rural and suburban areas, farmers and others who have to do with the use of pesticides. And it is predicated on the soundest of bases-thpesticides are absolutely essential to modern agriculture, and that what is needed is a wider knowledge of basic safety pre- cautions. Reading labels, of course, is the first step. Then comes storage pesticides must be kept out of the reach of children, irresponsible or uninformed people. Then they must be applied precisely as directed. Finally, adequate provision must be made for disposal of used containers. It is suggested that the t best means of doing this is to bury them at least 18 inches deep in an isolated area away from water supplies. This is an education project of the high-- 1 est importance. Over 350,000 tons of pesticides are used each year to control destruc-- 1 tive insects. The accidents they cause are totally unnecessary and are the result of sheer carelessness. Charges that the federal government is buying up private land ami needlessly, raising the prosjiects of nationaiiation of the country private land resources, have been voiced by Charles A. Mr. Gillett suggested for consideration by government land planners that leasing of lands or renting might be explored. He concluded by reminding city dwellers that every acre of land removed from tax rolls by government will increase the tax burden carried by property remaining in private ownership.
