' Tri-Sta- te Cancer No Longer Means Certain Death if Diagnosed Early Enough For centuries cancer was tantamount to a sentence of death. Today one of every two cancer cases fcould be cured. This new and hopeful look at a disease that was once hopeless is due in part to improved techniques of treatment. But the latest in surgery and radiation cant save you unless the cancer is diagnosed early enough. This warning was sounded by Dr. L. H. Merrill, medical advisor of the American Cancer ..Society in Carbon county, who today discussed methods of treating cancer. Pointing out that the Cancer Societys drive is educational, Dr. Meras well as rill urged the public to Stop, read fund-raisin- g. and heed. For a third successive year we are promoting the information that a regular checkup is your of the forms of cancer which is readily diagnosed. "We have now considered a cancer diagnosed early enough the first step toward cure. Youll now want to know how the cancer can be treated, the latest in suregry and radiation. "Let flatly that human cancer cannot be cured by drugs. There are only two methods of saving life from cancer: surgery and radiant energy.' Always remember this if anyone tries to sell you a drug that cures cancer or any of many other 'cures offered by the cancer quacks who thrive on fear and me-stat- e ignorance." Discussing surgery, Dr. Merrill said, Its now possible to remove growths from parts of the body once considered inaccessible. And sometimes, several months after the original operation, in certain cases, a surgeon will take a second look to make sure no renegade cells have been left to spread to new sites." The ACS medical advisor said more extensive surgery is now possible because of better anesthesia. Sulfa drugs and reduce the possibility of infection and hasten recovery. And improved methods of blood replace- best protection against cancer," the medical advisor continued. So lets suppose you are one of the wise ones; that from now on youll make a habit of an annual checkup. Then lets suppose that you happen to be the one in every four of us who will someday get cancer for those are the odds of the disease striking you or me or our next door neighbors. But to- y been used to e can bomday d bard a tumor without significant damage to normal tise sue. One of these units revolves around the patient; another turns the patient in a revolving chajr," declared Dr. Merrill. While no drug exists that can cure cancer, many men of science believe the greatest breakthrough to eventual control of the disease will come in the field of chemotherapy. The American Cancer Society supports many projects in this vast area of research. VA said, wartime veterans withd out disabilities may be admitted for nonservice-connecte- d conditions when beds are available, provided they state under oath they are not able to pay for the needed care. Along with the oath the veteran is required to file a statement of his financial assets and liabilities. Before hospital admission, the veteran is given an opportunity to review this statement and compare his ability to pay with an estimate of the amount the needed care would cost in private hospitals, VA said. Emergency patients, however, may be admitted immediately on arrival at the hospital and may complete the financial statement and oath later when their condition permits, VA explained. VA hospital managers have - "Why are there service charges on a checking account? ' Pure logic: When the cost of the banks services to a checking depositor is greater than the interest which the depositors loanable balance allows the bank to earn, the bank must make a charge.
