These conferences replaced the report card system for the end of the first period. Through these conferences we expect to build a closer relationship and better cooperation between the home and school," stated Russell Williams, principal of the two elementary schools. The period and the discussion of problems common to the relationship of the school and the child, it is felt, will help considerably to advance all children scholastically as well as socially. As evidenced from the response of both parents and teachers, these conferences were a huge success. The Independent Coal and Coke Company, one of Utahs largest commercial coal mining concerns, reports net profits of $67,247 for the nine months of 1954 ending September 30. The firm, which operates coal mines in Carbon county Kenilworth, Castle Gate and Clear Creek reported a net loss of $102,347 for the corresponding period last year. Profits for the third quarter of this year amounted to $67,696 as against loss of $141,044 in that quarter of 1953. The profits anc) loss statements for the comparable periods were before income tax deductions, but after deductions for depiction and depreciation. W. J. OConnor, president of the company, told stockholders that sales for the first nine months amounted to 576,618 tons of coal as compared with 660,286 tons. The loss in tonnage was due largely to decline in industrial sales to the export consumers, including the big Hanford, Washington, atomic energy plant. There also was a decline in industrial sales to the Utah Power and Light Company within Utah, Mr. OConnor reported. However, the Utah Power and c Light Company's our at Castle generating plant Gate mine is expected to be in operation some time in November. This plant will provide a sizable d load of industrial coal so vitally necessary when domestic business drops off in the spring, Mr. OConnor reported. He added that the increase in net profits for the nine months this year as against last year's loss is the direct result of lower mine operating costs and economies made effective in all departments of the company the first SUN-ADVOCAT- REDD MOTOR COMPANY 129 West Main |
