Their report came in response to numerous requests of stock-me- n that the government under, take a program for the stock-killin- g halogeton on the millions of acres of public range land in the west. H. Byron Mock, regional administrator for the Bureau of Land Management in Salt Lake City, said he received the information from Marion Clawson, director of the Bureau of Land Management, and Secretary of the Interior Oscar L. Chapman. Halogeton can be curbed by preventing soil degeneration ancf the vegetative by maintaining cover on western range lands, Secretary Chapman said. Clawson Director explained that experiments and observations by BLM range managers have shown that halogeton cannot compete successfully with hardy grasses. If infested areas that lend themselves to reseeding are seeded with crested wheat grass, halogeton is choked out, he added. Weed control, while vitally , important, has depended on secondary benefits of range imin areas where provements ranchers have recognized the need of control and contributed volun over-grazin- weed-contr- ol The Fine Arts Study club met Thursday evening. Twenty-thre- e members were present with Mrs. L. H. Merrill as a special guest. Hostesses were Mrs. Jack Davis, Mrs. Paul Starrs and Mrs. Max Robb. The evening was spent in learning square dancing with Mrs. Richard Hampshire as the teacher, and lessons in hair styling were given by Mrs. Dorothy Kaye. The tables were decorated multicolored with gym drop trees. Plans were made for a valentine day dance, the proceeds to go for special equipment for the Price hospital. Orlande D. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Veillard visited with their son, Paul, Jr., in Salt Lake City over the week end. Paul is attending the University of Utah. The Missionary Circle held its regular meeting at the home of to range improvement funds, Director Clawson said. Within its present budget, the bureau is doing all it can to improve and rehabilitate the range, he explained. The only hope for ranchers to avoid serious losses from halogeton poisoning, the director added, is for them to learn to recognize the weed, avoid it while herding sheep, and to support a broad campaign of education, research and weed control. Director Clawson explained weed that the rapidly-spieadiinvades areas wheie the natural vegetation cover is sparse. where Look for halogeton fire, stock or vehicles have disturbed plant cover and given the week a chance to germinate, he told stockmen. Check around rodent holes, ant hills, salting grounds, and where the range is heavily used and soil is washed and gullied by erosion. Spectacular cases of poisoning readily come to the attention of ranchers but it is now becoming a time bomb effect. Cumulative effects of poisoning will cause sheep and cattle to suffer from what appears to be and thousands of malnutrition, cattle have been condemned as a result. Also, a mild case of poisoning often causes abortion in livestock another hidden economic loss resulting from halogeton infestations. tarily City-Coun- ng There are now ty r DRAPERY SLIP-COVE- Heres a special way to relieve the worst miseries of col' with the same Vicks VapoRub that brings such grand results when you rub it on . , . its Vicks VapoRub in steam!
