The number is increasing at the rate of about 400 each month. VA said that the total of connected cases is greater, although no reliable figures for this group are available. Doctors believe that the peak of this disease among veterans will not be reached for some time. To keep pace with any increase in demand for hospitalization of tuberculous veterans, VA is planning to add four new tuberculosis hospitals to the 18 already in operation. In addition, the agency will continue to set aside a number of beds for tuberculosis patients in other VA hospitals. VA pointed out that all cases receive prompt attention, and if a bed is not immediately available in a VA hospital, a veteran with a disability may be sent to a private hospital at government expense, if necessary. The law provides that connected cases will be treated if beds are available and if the veteran states that he is unable to pay for treatment.
