It is important to have an education in order to survive in this world and essential in d finding a meaningful job. Without a college degree it is almost impossible to find a job to support a family. If the kids grow up thinking education isn't important they won't see any need to spend their money to go to college. Children need to feel love. If love isn't shown to them, how can they show it to others? Justlikeyou and I, children have feelings too. We need to respect those feelings. "Before you can love someone else you have to love yourself. The home is where they leam tois love. Respect is also taught in the home. It is important to show children respect and how to respect others. self-estee- m Are the problems in the home getting worse? Some of you may say "no", but I say "yes". The home is where learning takes place. Children leam atayoungage, from home, toe importance of an education, how to love themselves and others, and the values they are to live by. If the parents don't show in the child's educainterest any toe then child won't show any tion, interest in education either. Children are eager to leam when they are young. The early years of their life are critical. They work hard to get good grades to being with, but if their parents don't seem to care how they are doing or don't show that they are proud, the children's achievements will drop along with fast-pace- The . ' When was the last time you spent some quality time with your parents? Think hard! for a lot of you the answer was "too long. Life goes by far too last and , if you blink, you might miss the most important part. The most important part that I am talking about is family. Your parents are only on this earth for a very short time. So that you aren't at toe funeral crying about not spending enough time with one of your parents.DO things with them, Go for family outings and family dinners. Even if you Can't be with them, let them see your children. It will be beneficial to everyone, , ' Your parents need you now more than ever. Show them thanks for the wonderfuljob of raising such afineperson as yourself. The single most important thing to remember is thatyou can't just TELL them you love them, you have to SHOW THEM! J V Dear Sir or Madam: I, am a concerned citizen, think the waste dump above town should be eliminated for the better of the community. When driving to Salina from every direction except West, the fires lit by ignorant citizens of the community at the waste dump can be seen for miles. The waste dump should also be stopped due to the stench that blows down from there in the winter. By having our trash removed to another location it would prevent the waste of your precious time. The Salina waste dump has detracted from this community in many more ways than it has benighted. Sincerely, Brett Allred Student-NSH- S Letter From the Editor: There are those times in our lives when we do something really dumb that brings our inadequacies into focus. For toe sake of brevity, suffice it to say that allowing myself to be provoked, showing my temper, and saying something I wish Id never said, I made a complete fool of myself! This happened at Moms Cafe in Salina, in public, and Im sure I hurt many feelings. Years ago, when I was young, a very wise man (my father), continually taught tois one axiom: Ignorant people argue; : fritelligentpeople discuss! Know- - ing that all my life, this one incident very poignantly displayed MY ignorance and the guilt felt by lack of disrespect - for myself and others. I was WRONG! ts NOTHING us from being RUDE nothing! I have shed tears and lost friends because of tois project and even that is no excuse. We need each other, toe young and toe old, toe struggling and toe successful, toe doers and toe dreamers, to stand together and make toe world a The greatest thing we can ever leam in tois life is the ability to get along with others, no matter what we may, or think we may, have endured from them! We are the parents, the teachers, the leaders. Those from whom you are supposed to leam. In your judgments, I pray that you w ill remember that we, too, are still learning. We did not come into the world as adults, but rather as babes, justlikeyoudid. Being a parent (or any adult) is not synonymous with perfection. Please be patient with us. The tall building was dark and gruesome. It looked like a 1 9th century building. In one of the windows of this mysterious building there was a sign, the sign said in shakey letters: Marty and Susan, come in, weve been waiting for you. Marty and Susan were scared by toe looks of the building, but curiosity drug the two lone travelers in. With the ease of opening the door they were inside looking around to see that the interior of the building was no different than the outside. The old furniture looked as if Marty and Susan had somehow traveled back in time. The carefully constructed coffee table looked as if it were hand crafted with the most elegant designs that either ofthem had ever seen. There was a mysterious green mist in toe far comer. Marty said, Where are we, what do you want from us? The sound of the building started to shake like a mighty earthquake. Then they heard a voice that sounded out of tois world, and voice said, Behold me, I am toe all mighty Zonar and you two have been chosen to come and play a game. If you lose this game you will die, if you win you will have toe key to unlock the tragic deaths of many others who have unsuccessfully played toe game. Then an outline of a man appeared in front of the two. From what they could see of him his clothes were dirty and his face held the wrinkles of age. In the ancient clothes he wore he was shivering, although it was very warm inside the building. ' Zonar had dark blue hair that seemed to be moving with the bust that used it for a home. And a walking stick that was two feet age! Sandi Harvey-Olso- n P.S. It was NOT the food nor the service that I complained about And, feeling like scum, I drove back to the cafe and with tears ready to fall, meekly apologized. Dear Editor, Several times during toe year you publish articles from various people who wish to express their viewpoints on different subjects. Most of these articles express opinions about important facts or issues. What I don't understand is toe way some people go about writing these articles. Most people who have these concerns are willing to support themselves by putting their name along with their iV 4 concern. It's those who don't dare to sign their own statement who concern me. I don't see how a person can have strong enough concerns and feelings to publish an article that is going to be seen by thousands and thousands of people, yet fail to believe in it enough to support themselves by simply signing their name at toe bottom of that same belief. I wonder if they really believe in what they write to convince others, or whether it is simply an attempt to convince someone else enough to do something about it for them. It is my opinion if a person feels strong enough to express a viewpoint in tois manner that it should deserve more than a hidden identity. Sincerely, Jeremy Peterson Student - NSHS - taller than he was. It was marked with notches that covered toe stick. The notches were names of those who had failed at playing the game. He said in a very shaky voice, Finally you two have come. We have been waiting for many, many years. That was all he said. Then he helped them get into their armor. Marty and Susan were confused at what was going on but they didnt dare ask questions for their ear of Zonar was great When they got their armor on Zonar disappeared and Marty and Susan found themselves in another rom. This room was like an auditorium. The seats woe made of human skeletons. The skeletons all had the expression of fear on their decaying bones. Susan gasped when she saw such a frightful sight. Her scream died in her throat as they saw a man that was much taller than Zonar walking up to them. Marty and Susan just stared at the man frightened so bad they couldnt even breathe. The man was not an enemy as they soon would leam, rather, he was to become their friend. He gave both Marty and Susan a bow of silver and seven golden arrows. The man vanished into thin air and Marty and Susan were again on their own. They started to try to figure out what was going on when Marty saw outof the comer of his eye toe most frightful creature he had ever seen. As Marty turned around he saw the spider-lik- e creature with a tail like a scorpion. It had sixteen red teeth hanging out of a very large mouth. Marty got his bow out and pulled an arrow back on the taut bowstring and he carefully let the arrow go. The arrow flew through the air so fast that it left a lightning streak behind it The arrow struck the spider right in toe center of his ugly, hairy head. It didntdie. While Marty was battling the spider a mean looking man sneaked up on Susan and struck her on toe arm with a sword. Susan turned and quickly shot at the man with a golden arrow. The man let out a terrifying scream and died instantly with toe black blood coming from his mouth. Susan, trembling went to the man got her arrow for later use. She also got the heavy sword that the slain man had used. She then cautiously stabbed toe man to make sure he was dead. When she had recovered from fright, and sickness from seeing the gruesome sight she went to help Marty. While Susan was taking care of toe vicious man, Marty had maintained his battle with the beastly spider. He had ran out of arrows. Susan arrived on the scene just in time to give him the black blood-staine- d sword. Marty swung at the beast with all of his might. The thing was bleeding very badly now but still wasnt dead. Marty got hit with the monsters scorpion tail and was hurt very badly. Susan took toe sword and began defending herself with it. When the spider Children need to feel love and love others so they will succeed in life. In today's world you need to be able to communicate well and it is pretty difficult to do that if you haven't learned how to respect others. Values are important in family life. They let children know what is expected of them and the way they are to act Oftentimes children will watch their parents for an example. The example parents set is critical to the child's behavior. Some parents expect their children to behave one way, but they act differently. How are children supposed to know how to act if toe actions of their parents and what their parents say contradict each other? If values are not taught at home where are children going to get them? Some parents seem to think that's what school is for, but a teachers responsibility is to educate, not teach family values. That is the job of toe parents. It is true that some kids will do what they please and not pay any attention to what parents tell them, but for toe most, if you start at a young age teaching your children toe importance of education, how to love, and what values to live by, they will try to do these things. Parents need to show their children what is important to them. They can express their feelings of what is right and wrong, but remember, ACTIONS speak louder than words! Ann Bosshardt Student-NSH- S Game got tired she stabbed him with the sword in the chest After a mighty roar of pain the spider collapsed dead. Marty and Susan heaved a sigh of relief. Exhausted Susan slumped in one of the skeleton chairs. She watched amazed as a black rose vine grew around her wrists and ankles. She could feel them tighten around her, squeezing her until the blood was throbbing in her veins. She grasped the sword and quickly cut toe vines off of her arms and legs. She watched as the vine crumbled like ashes to toe floor. When Susan looked around she noticed that there was a strange light glowing from the one side of toe room. She started walking toward it when she heard a voice say, It is not over yet. I will not lose this game. Then toe light disappeared and a deep growling sound came from behind her. She turned around and saw a wolf with red eyes and blood stained teeth coming for her. She thought that she couldnt fight the beast She was exhausted. When she heard the voice of the friendly man say, Dont give up. Look at the sword. It will tell you how to beat toe mighty Zonar! Susan looked down and saw letters being written on toe sword. They said, Those who think the have lost have lost Strike the Wolf in toe chest and wait until his eyes have changed to green -then shoot him with your remaining arrow. The wolf started coming and Susan ran toward him and struck him in the chest The wolf started to scream in tremendous pain. His eyes started to change colors from red to yellow and then to green. Susan knew tois was the only way to save her and her older brother, Marty. She grabbed an arrow with her bleeding hand pulled on toe string and let the arrow go. The arrow whizzed thorough toe air not giving the wolf enough time to dodge the arrow. When the arrow - J A' " glanced on the side of the humongous house and saw names on a gold inscribed list On toe top of toe list was their fathers name. At toe bottom of toe list of names were Martys and Susans names. This was to be their house and they were amazed at the house and its size. This was their prize for winning the game. The next morning while Susan were watching and Marty TV there was a news flash. The reporter said, Missing people had been appearing out of no where. They all said that they wanted to thank Marty and Susan for returning them to their homes and for helping them out of toe game. Whoever this Marty and Susan are, they have made a lot of people happy. If : - ''A i ijf i! : OakleySwglassct Zi'C .. ' " struck toe wolf, it yelled out in the agony of death. Susan you have defeated the mighty Zonar. You will go far in life. . , All of a sudden toe lights in the room came on. When Susan stood up she noticed that Marty was nowhere in sight Susan looked around and saw a white lion walking down invisible stairs right above toe floating Marty. Susans first thought was that toe lion was going to harm Marty. As she watched she realized that the lion was white so he was there to help Marty and Susan. The lion finally got up to Marty and helped him up. Martys wounds from fighting toe spider were already healed. Susan looked down at where her wounds were, but they were gone. Marty and toe lion came up to Susan and astonished her by talking. He spoke with a voice that reminded her of her father that had been missing for a long time, Congratulations you have won the game. You have set all the people who lost, free. I knew you two were toe only ones who could win. This game will change your lives. It already has. Then toe lion disappeared and Marty and Susan were standing on toe front porch of a house.
