And there is still ume to schedule teacher workshops and classroom orientation sessions, he continued. The Utah History Fair is open to students and teachers from grades 4 to 12. The purpose of the fair is to promote history and creative expression in Utahs schools, Johnson noted Theme for this years fair is Communication in History: The Key to Understanding : The theme may be applied to any phase oflocal regional, national or world history. The Utah History Fair was established in 1 980 as means of revitalizing the study of history in the public schools. Students are able to present their iindings to a wide audience and find that histoiy is interesting and fun, Johnson said Participants come to realize that histoiy is much more than memorizing facts from a textbook Those involved in the Utah History Fair research a historical topic of their choosing and present the findings in several ways, Johnson said They may write an essay, write and produce a short dramatic presentation, construct an exhibit or produce an audio visual program. More than 5,000 students participated in the fair last year. All received some sort of recognition, including certificates, ribbons, trophies, hooks, cash prizes, and scholarships Entry cards are due February 1, 1993 and regional compeutions will be held in March. Top students advance to state and national competition. Did you know that some early Mormon pioneers were called to serve the United Slates in the Civil War? In 1862, in answer to President Abraham Lincolns request to raise, arm, and equip a company of cavalry for ninety days service, Brigham Young called 100 men to fill the governments call. They were to guard the mail stations and telegraph lines between the Platte River and Fort Bridgcr, a distance of about 600 miles. The men were sworn in as United States cavalry men and were to furnish their own mounts and equipment. The new soldiers were called to a special meeting on Temple Square the day after they were sworn in. Brigham Young met with them, gave them instructions, blessed them and wished them godspeed and protection. As the Mormon leader looked over the group he said, I desire of the officers and privates of this company that in this service you will conduct yourselves as gentlemen, remembering your allegiance and loyalty to our government, and also not forgetting that you are members of the organization to which you belong.. As he concluded his talk, Young turned to Captain Lot Smith, who had been the youngest soldier in the Mormon Battalion and told him to take of the supplies of the army, but Do not not to take the uniforms. take them and do not wear them if they are offered, Young admonished. The troops had good reason to be thankful for Youngs advice not to wear the federal uniforms. Sometime later a group of Washakie Indians told a member of Smiths company that they had been completely surrounded by the Indians and had they been U.S. soldiers in uniform, all would have been killed.
