Music is an important part of my life and don't know if any of us could not celebrate this Christmas season without music. The other day Zions Bank in Salina invited some classes from the elementary school and the Faith Baptist school to help them decorate their Christmas tree and be involved in their annual lighting ceremony. The holiday season is upon us - and it can be fun if we let it. We think we have problems - but more often than not someone somewhere else has problems equal to or greater to our own and they are surviving. Sometimes we think our small towns may not be as glamorous as some of the larger cities seem to be. Maybe there arent the fancy malls to shop in, with the magical lights and characters of Christmas aboundentertaining and the evening-lonment. But in some ways those larger ciues cant hold a candle to our g atmostphere. For instance...In last weeks Davis County Clipper, the headline on the front page noted that Santa is Not Coming to Town!" I had to continue reading. Santa, who had been the star of Bountifuls Christmas parade for the past 20 years, would not be making such an appearance this year. The annual parade had been cancelled for lack of interest on the part of merchants, the city, and chamber of commerce. A meeting held by the local Jaycees, promoters and organizers of the parade, had been attended by just one business owner though dozens had been invited to attend and help - foum with the planning. No Santa? Talk about no joy in Mudville... The story has a happier ending, however, for a headline on the front page of the next issue of the Clipper, noted that "Santa is Coming To Town Afterall!" Business people still didn't want the parade, but somehow, they'd schedule some appearances by Santa. The story said that there had been so many responses following the appearance of the sad tidings in the paper, that the businesses decided they'd better make some changes in their plans. Santa has made his appearin ance several places locally aland will be doing so many ready, more times between now and Christmas, thanks to the dedicated businesses and volunteers who work so hard to ensure that Santa and at least a little Christmas Joy is available for our children and the young-at-hcar- t. For these people, this service is a big part of their own Christmas holiday tradition. Giving of self is the best part of the Christmas season. Other gifts wear out or break, or are forgotten -but when we give our own time and talents to making it a happy time for someone else - the gift lives on. j'K A Z' The Way It Looks From Here n . r, Vi Z, ' TV iv . . , . -- t4 small-tow- I I 9. ? The children from the public schools came in and helped decorate the tree and then they proceeded to sing a couple of songs about having a merry Christmas and Jolly Old Saint N'cholas. The songs from the Faith Baptist students were very much in contrast to the Godless atmosphere associated with our public schools. They sang of Christ and his example for love that should be practiced throughout the world to bring about the peace that is so desperately needed. talked with several of the teachers from our public schools and they too are frustrated when it comes to talking about ideas or concepts about any religion. Even the classes where religion is discussed as part of history or culture there are so many dos and donts that many teachers are intimidated against presenting the information in any form. This world is in need of so much more good and love and concern for others and the elimination of God from parts of our society only erodes the strengths this wonderful country was founded upon. And this erosion came into a little more focus this Christmas Season when even the mention of Christ and Christmas as being synonymous has become unacceptable by l .V7 2rf&4 itA,' ' A&, 't Xf is&gg i i J V: - ... 9 a& V 4 1 Where Did All These Birds Come From?
