Show ( IQ The Salina Sun, Wednesday. Sept. 23. 1992 NSHS Volleyball Hurricane, Richfield, Souih Sevier faced off with the North Sevier volleyball team this past week and North Sevier won two and lost one, not bad for a weeks performance. Hurricanes team is full of experience and seniors this year and it paid off in their game with North Sevier. North Sevier seemed to have no problem playing w ith Hurricane to eight points but then seemed to lose control of their game. Their dropped their first game 15-- 8 and the second game Coach Jill Porter explained that part of the loss was because Hurricane did have a crowd was vocal and with them and the Salina players had a hard time keeping focused on the game. Above that Hurricane had a good, solid team. Both the JV and the freshmen teams lost their games against Hurricane. 15-1- team wins over So. Sevier This was a good sound victory over a solid Richfield team said Porter. Audrey Hales also had a night of it with several key blocks, one of them being the game winning point that Richfield put up. Her performance seemed to spark the team and kept them going The Richfield games were a different setting for the teams from North Sevier. The freshmen did come up on the short end after three games but the JV squad pulled off some good wins and won in three. For the varsity it was a two game victory w'hich was the first time they have garnered a win in two games this year and the first time ever of beating Richfield in two games. Their scores were 15-- 4 and throughout the night. With South Sevier the Freshmen won in three games while the JV lost in three. The varsity won in 15-- 6 three with scores of and 15-1- 5, lot of it was that Richfield wasnt really expecting anything good from us and came out over e confident said Porter. Plus, Hansen and Becky Hales were really on their game that night frustrating Richfield with good hits. The back row for North Sevier also played an excellent game with Shauna Squires shinning with many digs to keep the ball playable. 15-- A 7. The first game was a blowout for South Sevier. Porter explained that it was hard to come off such a good win against Richfield and mentally her team looked tired for South Sevier. After a good yelling from the coach Porter explained that they pulled together and went after the win. Their effort was helped especially after South Sevier made Jeri-ann- six mistakes in a row. The third game was closer but South Sevier lacked an attack and North Sevier pulled out a winning lead. The pressure was on North Sevier this week because they had to win two of the three games to stay in contention for going to region. Now the ratio they they are sitting at need to go to region. North Sevier will play Millard on Saturday at North Sevier at 12:00, 1:30 and 3:00. North Sevier lost to Millard in their first match of the season in three very close games. But now we are playing a totally different kind of ball now. We are attacking the ball with confidence. Plus the players know their positions and Millard will find us to be a different team, said Porter. Porter thanked the fans for their support and part in their success this year. 3-- 3, NSHS Wolves 55-- 6; will drop Hurricane game take on Beaver this week Hurricane made tough game as the Wolves dropped the football game 55-- after a last second score by theTigers. This puls the Wolves at 0-- this year after games with Kanab, Richfield, Millard and Hurricane. Hurricane did have a big, solid, experienced team but there w'ere some good things accomplished by North Sevier. According to assistant Coach, Chad Thompson, there w'ere a shining glimmer of hope North Sevier did control the offensive line and moved the ball all night. Nine turnovers by North Sevier was the problem that allowed 1 urricancs defense to score more than their offense. Hurricane scored 35 of their points directly off from turnovers, two of them run in on the turnover. North Sevier did rush the ball well. Craig Thurston had over 100 yards rushing following an offensive line that was shooting out and opening holes that the running backs havent seen consistently all year. Even the passing game worked w'dl except for the turnovers. Ace Shaheen was the top receiver and caught almost everything that got to him all night. 6 4 1 Thompson explained that North Sevier was never really stopped offensively all night except by themselves. The two teams were really pretty even but the score did not show that this week. We are developing into a tough, well executing team but the kids need to keep believing in themselves, said Thompson. There was a lot of improvement over last week and that is the important thing for the players to remember. He commented that it was discouraging to be on the five or ten yard line and then fumble or have an interception but this could be corrected. Beaver is next for the Wolves and their game is on Friday in Beaver at 7:30p.m. They areabig team and have a tradition of good football but the way we are playing we should give them a good game said Thompson. With the line performing as they did and the backs doing their job this should be a good game. Improvement seems to be the story. As we cut the mistakes and put it with the efficiency of the offense we will be a competitive team, said assistant coach Chad Thompson. Beaver is undefeated this year undefeated team in the region but there could be a surprise to them with an about face and give them a good game said Thompson. The Wolves will be working harder and harder on execution and Man dies of now, cutting down on costly mistakes. A good thing about the Hurricane team was that Hurricane was bigger but we lined up good against them and still moved the ball. Eighty yards in three plays made up their scoring drive in the fourth quarter. apparent North Sevier High School Cheerleaders are an important part of the school spirit at games and other events. Get your licenses Hunters, dont forget to purchase your big game hunting licenses and open bull elk permits before the hunt openers. The open bull elk hunt begins Wednesday , Sept. 30, and the deer opener is set for Saturday, October 17. The cutoff for license sales is midnight the day before the hunts begin. According to Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Assistant Director Darrell Nish, several years ago the Board of Big Game Control adopted cutoff dates for license pur chases. The primary purpose for this cutoff is to prevent people from taking extra animals and buying a permit to cover it, Nish noted. In the past, some unethical hunters have illegally taken an animal during the hunt and then purchased another license to cover their actions. Cuiofi dates for licenses w'ere established to help prevent this activity. The mandatory cutoff for buying licenses has helped decrease illegal harvesting of big game animals.
