Doubling as a fort, the mill provided a lookout and a fortified position for the settlers' protection. Brigham City was to be entirely surrounded by a wall of rock with a fort in the northeast corner. Plans called for the wall to be 12 feet high, with each settler earning his building lot by construction a portion of the wall. The wall was never completed. In her brief history of Brigham City, Mary Nichols wrote, "The original rock wall, which was intended to enclose the city, was never finished. The north and east lines were partly built twelve feet high, but for the walls to be erected on the south and west sides, only the rocks were hauled on the ground. Kcslcr had built a fine reputation as a master mill builder and wanted to go into business for himself, but Brigham Young told him his business was to be a millwright for the With Brigham Young's Church. financing the mill was built on a steep bank above Box Elder Creek. Water from the creek was diverted through a race ditch to a flume that ran into the building, turned the water wheel to generate power, then ran out again at the northeast corner and back into the creek. Records show the mill was first operated in 1857. Mormon aposde Lorenzo Snow, who served as superintendent, called Mads Christian Jensen from Ogden to operate the mill. The mill building, now housing the John H. Bott and Sons Monument business, is a historical site in Brigham City. In 1872, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to establish Yellowstone National Park, the world's first national park. f Vonda V. Huntsman, 75 Vonda V. Huntsman, 75, of Richfield, wifc of the late Rex L.
