The Natural Side Terry Messmer Utah State University Humans, in attempts to control wildlife pests, have long subscribed to the cherished theory that animals can be cither repelled or attracted at will. In come cases this has been done by using sounds. Some even subscribe to the fallacy of using electromagnetic fields for pest control. IN using sound, the more straightforward of these gadgets blasts noise to frighten birds and animals. One of the best examples of this is in North Dakota where propane cannons arc used to disperse blackbirds feeding in sunflower fields. The more innovative of these theories is the magnetic field devices. These supposedly attain control by emitting a magnetic field which acts as a shield. Manufacturers claim these magnetic fields cause pests within the zone of influence to stop eating, drinking and mating. They say all you have to do is plug the device in and your pest control problems are over. No mess, no fuss, and most of all there are no chemicals to bother with. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says they dont always work. This conclu- after a study in cooperation with three other governsion was reached ment agencies and two un iversities. Results indicate there are no biological effects on the pest species treated. Currently the EPA is pursuing enforcement actions against some 30 manufacturers and distributes of such devices. It is in the best interest of consumers to avoid purchasing any newfangled gadgets purporting pest control either through electromagnetic radiation or ultrasonics. Your best pest control continues to be an integrated pest management program. If you happen to be a store owner who stocks electromagnetic control devices, its in your and the customers best interest to remove them. After all, you wont want to be accused of selling something that doesnt work while risking the chance the each item sold could result in a hefty fine from the EPA. Many of these free prizes could end up costing you more than the prize is worth. The Department of Commerce has a few lips to help consumers spot free prize scams. Look out for attached strings. An item is not free unless you can obtain it without purchasing anything else. In most cases, the consumer must purchase something else It's really to take advantage of the word free. Oftcn a free prize offer involves the disclosure of your credit card number to validate a free prize award. Never give your credit card number to strangers. There arc usually conditions to securing free prize offers: substantial handling fees, shipping charges or even membership fees. Think twice before paying any charges or fees. Many operators will offer free prizes along with products you can buy at reduced prices, to greatly tempt consumers. Buying a years supply of vitamins may not seem too much to ask if a week in Tahiti comes along with the free deal. However, paying inflated prices for the vitamins docs not justify a trip with expensive hidden travel charges added. Many promoters are using 900 numbers to entice consumers to call for free gifts. Consumers are often left on the line for extended periods of time or told to dial additional 900 not easy being green Dennis Hinkamp Utah State University I think it was Kcrmit the frog who once said I ts not easy being green. Its not easy being a green (environmental conscious) consumer cither. It has become socially unacceptable to throw away an aluminum beverage can at a party. At the same time, it has been socially acceptable to talk about rotting garbage (compost) at a party. In 1987 about 57 of Americans said they recycled cans, bottles or paper. By 191 that percentage had risen to 80 percent. Recycling is by far the most frequently cited green behavior, followed by using recycled products and avoiding over packaged products. The green consumer has become important enough that there is now a Green MarkctAlcrt business newsletter and research organization that advises businesses on how to please the green consumer. According to the Green Market-Aler- t, consumers fall into three categories. Which profile to you fit? l.Thc Visionary Greens: the 5 to 15 of the population with an envi ronmental awareness that extends beyond shopping to an overall environmentalist lifestyle. 2. The Hard Core Browns: This of the represents the 15 to 30 population that is anti environmentalist. This group cannot be swayed over to the green side. 3. Green once in a whilc.,; This is the largest group, 55 to 80 of consumers who express concern for the environment but dont always put these concerns into action. From a marketing point of view, the maybe greens are the group that has the greatest potential to be swayed by green oriented packaging and advertising. However, marketing research shows that consumers arc wary of false advertising and the environmental ethics of big business in general. Labeling is still uneven at best, although California, New York and Rhode Island have passed labeling laws that control the use of environmental terms. Some of the newer labels will not only say contains recycled materials but will also list the percentage of recycled material inside the current recycled symbol of three arrows lorming a triangle. Some of the new labels will add the words post consumer waste to the percentage. Post consumer waste? Even the green movement is starting to get governmental sounding jargon. i numbers to claim their prizes. What this usually adds up to is a very large phone bill. Be suspicious of fine print. Be aware of small print which reads: The chances of winning this prize are 1:1,000,000,000. Many people invest money in a prize that looks so easy to win, but, in reality, is next to impossible. And, finally, if you are hit with a free prize offer, stop and think, use your own good judgment, fraudulent operators dont expect that. lmmunl!ati0 clinic June 10 The Central Utah Public Health Department will hold an immunization clinic in Salina, Wednesday, June 10, at the American Legion Building, from 9 a.m. to 1 1:30 a.m. .
