The stairs arc narrow and steep, and maneuvering in the crawl space among the wooden rafters and support was very difficult. When the job was completed, more than 2,000 pounds of debris were removed. By 1995, a total of 800,000 to 1 million jobs will have been cut nationwide due to reductions in defense spending. However, converting money from defense to non defense expenditures will increase national saving and investment, reduce the national deficit and increase rates of growth in the American economy, Robson noted. Federal cuts in defense spending will reduce economic growth in Utah over the next four by 12 to 1 years, but it will lead to higher economic growth in the long run, according to R. Thayne Robson, Director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the University of Utah. In 1991, 9 or about 70,000 jobs in Utah were dependent directly or indirectly upon defense. This is down from about 80.000 or 1 1 in 1988. Dr. Robson projects that Utah will lose 3,000 to 6.000 high paying defense jobs per year for the next 3 to 4 years. This made up over 25 of the UHS AAs budget each year. For 106 high schools in Utah, First Security Banks contribution to the UHSAA has allowed 103,000 high school students an opportunity to experience the excitement of high school athletics and activities. It has helped pay for the rising costs of catastrophic insurance for all participants, transportation for state acawards, tivities, academic and the producing activities of music, speech, drama, tennis, golf and cross country. The catastrophic insurance, which is mandatory for every student participating in extra curricular activities, puts a huge strain on the UHSAAs budget. The corporate sponsorship money is essential in paying this bill. We want to take the month of May to thank this organization for all it has done for the UHSAA, its member schools, and most importantly, its students, said Glen Bccre, Executive Director of the L FS A A.
