There are five skills that parents can practice to increase the self esteem of their child. Esteem Building Skill 1. Give lots of praise - for effort as well as accomplishment. Look for achievement, even in small tasks, and praise your child often. Let the child know that trying hard is even more important than winning. Esteem Building Skill 2. Help your child set realistic goals. If the child or parent, expects too much, the resulting failure can be a crushing blow. Your may not know that his or her personal best can make you just as proud as a blue ribbon. Esteem Building Skill 3. When correcting, criticize the action, not the child. Helpful Example: Climbing that fence was dangerous. You could have ben hurt, so dont do it again. Hurtful Example: You shouldnt have climbed that fence. Dont esteem-buildin- g pre-tee- n you have any sense? Esteem Building Skill 4: Give your child real responsibility. Children who have regular duties around the house learn to see themselves as valuable parts of a team. Completing their duties instills a sense of accomplishment. Esteem Building Skill 5: Show your children you love them. Hugs, kisses and saying, I love you helps your child feel good about himself or herself. Children are never too old to be told that they are loved and highly valued. An contrary to popular belief, single parent families can as give children the same basis for families, as long as the parent-chil- d relationship is strong and loving. Research shows that children of divorced parents are no more likely than others to abuse alcohol. self-estee- m two-pare- nt Ken Armstrong, Administrator 896-827- 1 ENT Arbon ext 203 896-665- 3 Curtis Orthopedic ..896-8271 ext 203 Harmon Urologist Dickinson Gastroenterologist ext. 2143 Referral only (Procedure Only)1 896-827- 1 Dr. Davis ext 203 Urologist 896-8271 Dr. Jacobs ext 203 Orthopedic 896-827- 1 ext 203 Brent Fox Hearing 896-827- 1 Dr. Osborne ext 203 Cardiologist 896-8271 Dr. Osborne ext 203 Cardiologist Dr. Lund ENT ....896-827- 1 ext 203 Brent Box Hearing 896-827- 1 Dr. McArthur ext 203 Orthopedic 896-405Dr. Hunsaker 3 Opthalmalogist 896-827- 1 Dr. Snihurowych Urologist ext 203 896-827- 1 Dr. Snihurowych Urologist ext 203 896-665- 3 Dr. McQueen Orthopedic 896-8271 Dr. Romney ext 203 Gynecologist Surgical Only Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. 00-288-8762 i 1 Jan. Its amazing that as the birth- days fly by - (and would you believe tonight is my birthday? Its nice to have the whole world join in to celebrate the occasion with their New Y ears Eve parties, etc.) How they gather speed after you pass the fifty year summit! My children are already beginning to reverse roles and once in a while try to take on the parental attitude. Wheres your coat? daughter asked last week, as we visited for the Christmas holiday. Youve got to start wearing a coat more often - youll catch pneumonia, she added, patting me on the arm. I was sweet. I suppressed the desire to tell her that Id wear a coat when I got good and ready! I just smiled and said, Youre so thoughtful!1 Ive often wondered if the term grouchy old man or crabby old woman come from the older persons way of saying things just as they are - not flowering them up as they likely did when they were young. Ive seen a lot of beating around the bush to keep from stepping on peoples toes. I catch myself once in a while, now stepping on the toes and giving an extra crunch for good measure when I tire of the evasive tactics. Looking ahead to the new year, we can wonder what will take place Will there be world peace? Will our country continue to fall behind Will the economy technically. worsen? Will we haw or improve a new president - and if so, wher will he lead us? Locally, we can wonder how the new school plan will work for our high schoolers. What kind of new city building will Salina construct? Will the the area? Center come to Equestrian Will UDOT promises be kept? Will Aurora install a sewer system? We all wonder if we will ha- e health and strength. Will our loved ones be safe and happy. I can wonder if the two little grandba-bie- s coming in 1992 will be boys or girls - or one of each! We can look ahead and worry about what is to come - it will only make us nervous, tense, and even sick if we worry hard and long enough. We mustnt get too mellow - we need to be concerned and do what we can to make things turn but we can tell ourout right selves that no matter what comes well be able to handle it - we may need some help from family or friends, but as next year draws to a close there should be some happy times mixed in with the not-so- - January Clinics Jan 2 Jan. 3 Jan. 7 Jan. 8 Could there have been a more beautiful white Christmas? It may not have been snow, but the ice crystals on every bush, tree, fence, and utility wire made the entire valley one huge white frosted tapestry. Even the tiniest weed was gowned in feathery icy white for the holiday. It truly was a White Christmas. This week we enter into a new year. Were getting pretty close to thattum ofthe century date arent we? When I was a kid I often 'wondered if Id be around when the numbers turned from the 190Gs tothe2000s. Since its so close, I hope Ill still be here! It will be hard getting used to saying, January 1, in the year 2000. 1 think after that well probably say, January 1, Two thousand and One or will we say Two 00 1? Just getting used to 1992 will take me some time I am sure. The bank suffers through my crossed out last digit as I remind myself that it will be 1992 now - not 1991. Its fun to sit on top of the new year and look back through the events of the past year. Most of the things I remember are good things. There are not so good things too, but somehow, as I review them, they dont seem quite as bad as when I was experiencing them. Maybe time is a healer - just as they If My wish for the New year, is like everyone elses - Peace.. .on earth - in our nation - in our homes - in our families - and in our hearts.
