Also at lected with the smoke were the NAPA, Jensen Drug and the Liquor Agency, all located on main street in Gunnison. The NAPA building, owned by Keller Christensen, had extensive smoke damage. Also, they had to pump out then basement the following day before they could begin to work on their furnace that was damaged by the water. Jensen Drug was alsi. damaged by the smoke. Owners Redge and Pat Jensen, along w nh a lot of volunteers were able to get a lot of their inventory out of the building but most was damaged to some extent by the smoke. Redge explained that even though the fire w'as close the fire departments did a remarkable job in keeping the flames from spreading to his building. In fact the covers on his air conditioners were not even scorched. Valley Furmture has been owned by the Jensen family since 1977 when they bought it from Vance Peterson. Prior to their ownership it was a Western Autostore prior to it being with True Value in 1966. It has also housed such businesses as a lumber yard and black smith in earlier years. As far as what will happen to the Valley Furniture business in Gunnison it is the consensus of the family members that they will open another store to serve the needs of the people in the area. Both Brent and Larry commented that it may not be built in the same location as there might be other locauons with more parking better suited foi such a business. All of the Jensens expressed their thanks for the many volunteers that helped in a very trying ume for them. Three fire departments, from Salma, Manti, and Ephraim were on hand to w'ork with the crews from Gunnison to put out and contain the fire. There was food donated to the volunteers as well as equipment from UP&.L and Gunnison Telephone and the prison that was used. For all this help they express their appreciation. There were touched with the kindness that has been expressed. |
