Show IQ The SnnNews. Wednesday. Auo. 7. 1QQ1 Can whirling disease be eliminated from Utah's streams? On the eve of a major chemical treatment of the Fremont River drainage to eliminate all fish and halt the spread of whirling disease in Utah, a fisheries biologist with the Utah DWR says it may be possible to eliminate the disease altogether. state-owne- Whirling disease is a debilitating condition of trout and salmon that causes deformities, blackened fins and sometimes death. In the final stages of the disease, trout swim out of control in circles, thus the name whirling disease. The disease does not affect humans or mammals and fish with the other disease are safe to eat. DWR The disease was firstdiscovered in Utah last June in several private hatcheries in Wayne County, near Loa. DWR officials fear the disd ease could spread to hatcheries and other private growers in the state as well as to free ranging populations of fish. Ron Goede, chief fish pathologist at the DWR Fisheries Experimental Station, Logan, says it may take as long as three full summer seasons of no fish at the infected private hatcheries and the Fremont River drainage to have a reasonable chance of eliminating the disease completely. While whirling disease spores from trout can live almost indefi counts cowcalf ratio for elk in Utah DWR big game biologists surveyed southeastern Utahs elk herds last month to determine the ratio of calves to cows. The cal fcow ratio enables biologists to judge the health of a population and make recommendations on numbers of antler-les- s permits issued for each hunting unit. We have an excellent herd on the Manti, said Ron Hodson, DWR game biologist. The calf count is what were after here. This years calf will be next years yearling bull. If production is down, cow permits will have to be cut the following year, he added. Range conditions look better than expected on the Manti. DWR biologists classified 1,243 elk on the Manti during the past several weeks, calves numbered 3 1 2 for a calfcow ratio of 42 calves per 1 00 cows. Last years ratio was higherwith45 calves per lOOcows. The ratio generally runs between 50 and 55. Elk classification on the LaSal Mountains resulted in 5 calves per 100 cows based on observation of about 680 elk. Last years ratio was 1 55 per 100. Most elk cows breed first as two year olds and drop calves when theyre three. Older cows may not calve. Twinning occurs only rarely. Because of these factors, elk just dont have as high a birthrate as deer or antelope. As long as the calfcow ratio remains at 40 per 100 cows or more, a population can maintain itself and provide a huntable surplus. Public meetings on waterfowl management The DWR will hold a public meeting in Price Thursday, August 8, to receive public input on preferred season dates for the 1991-9- 5 water fowl hunting seasons. The meeting convenes at Price City Hall, Room 207 at 7 p.m. At the June Wildlife Board meeting, a DWR proposal to split the state into two separate duck hunting zones was unanimously approved. The northern zone would primarily consist of wetlands along the Wasatch front. The southern zone would include all other waters and would incorporate Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties. This would provide to independent duck hunting seasons in the state. The northern zone, which typically freezes by the end of November, has limited late season hunting opportunities. The southern zone has many streams, rivers and spring fed marshes and remains open in December. Waterfowl use occurs throughout the fall and winter months. Public hearings will be held in Price, Richfield and Vernal to determine what season dates sportsmen prefer for the southern Zone. The Fish and Wildlife Service has decided to issue a draft biological opinion later this summer on the operation of Flaming Gorge Dam. The draft opinion will affect current dam operations, which have been determined to be harmful to endangered fish downstream, according to Reed Harris, of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, SLC. But the agency will also identify measures to offset harm to the fish. Those measures are aimed at narrowing the fluctuations in water flows downstream at Jensen, Utah, which is one of the key habitat areas for the fish, and releasing large amounts of water in the spring to more closely match historical flow patterns. Biologists say high spring flows create better habitat for fish. The way the dam is operated adjustments Vegetables and meats must be canned in a pressure canner at the appropriate pressure to guarantee their safety. If they are not canned at the appropriate pressure, the product could contain the deadly botulism toxin. Make sure you can vegetables safely, use current USDA directions. If your canning recipes are not USDA approved or are older than 1989 come into the extension office and get an updated book. -- d. -- Retirement Assistance STATE: Members of the Lost Creek Horse Club qualifying for Regional and Wranglers State Competition are, from left: Amber Trapp, Nicole ON TO REGION 4-- & The Field Representative for the Utah State Retirement Systems, Bonnie Sweat, will be in Richfield, at the Department of Transportation office Thursday, August 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may stop by at your convenience, or make an appointment by calling 1 The representative can essentially handle all functions of the main office. H Noyes, and Holly Trapp. could affect everything from recreation and trout fishing to power production, Harris said. For example, constraining the fluctuation in flow would hinder power production and could increase the cost. At this point we don t know what the effects will be on recreation such as river rafting, trout fishing and riparian habitat, Harris said. We will issue an opinion that deals only with the endangered fish. Western Area Power Administration, the federal agency responsible for selling and distributing electrical power produced at federal sties, remains concerned about some of the data on the habitat needs of the fish. They want to see more studies on winter and spring flow needs, etc. Another five years of study is planned toevaluate the operational changes identified in the opinion. ft" 73-6300. sucker, humpback chub, and bony-ta- il chub -- - while allowing water development to proceed. This worm is abundant throughout the Fremont River System, and feeds heavily on the spores. Once ingested, the spores pass through a second life stage which dies if not eaten by a trout. Weve picked this up an at early stage, and I think we still have it pretty much contained, said Goede.
