This exceeds the amount individuals contribute in actual dollars to their favorite causes by nearly 44 billion. Human service is clearly a valuable entity in the social marketflace and an offering that is often more affordable than a cash gift. We would assume (numbers are not available to us that a majority share of this volunteerism is performed by Senior Citizens. At least that is the situation in Sevier County and we are theorizing that we are a reflection of the national performance. Therefore, we congratulate you Seniors. Your service frequently is but not unappreciunheralded ated! Wherever you are found: in the schools, in retirement homes, in extended care facilities, in hospitals, in senior centers, or whether your work from your home in making telephone reassurance calls or friendly visits your service is part of a growing recognition of the value of sharing. Alert Utahns should beware of people soliciting funds for the US troops they may be ancj their families ", illegally operating. The Utah Department of Commerce issues this warning after receiving reports of people attempting to raise money to benefit troops in various ways, who are not legally registered to solicit funds for these purposes. Utah law requires charities to register with the Dept, of Commerce. And, in addition, state law requires persons of organizations soliciting for charity to obtain a permit and to disclose the percentage of collections used for the charity. Without these required registrations, the state and donor have no assurance that any of the money collected is being used for the purposes stated. Registered charities must tell you the percentage of the collections that will be used for charity. Some who are soliciting may be sincere and may not be familiar with registration requirements, said David Buhler, of the Department. However, all to often, unscrupulous people take advantage of the generosity and patriotism of Utahns to fill their own pockets and bank accounts. If you are contacted, check it out carefully with the Department of Commerce. Call the Division of Consumer Protection at - 1.
