Jennifer Johnson Councils meet to see that students miss less school due to activities Region 9 and 10, both 2A schools, have been meeting during the past two months to study the impact on academic achievement when students are out of school for activities. The Region 9 and 10 councils are now proposing that student and staff time out of school for activities be reduced in order to allow more time for academic achievement. The following plan is being considered: Football. With the exception of UEA weekend, all varsity football games should be scheduled on Friday or Saturday. All football playoff games should be on Saturdays if weather permits. TV Football schedules would be left up to the discretion of the regions. Basketball. Boys and Girls Basketball seasons should be realigned so that both seasons cover the same time period. Games should be on Friday and Saturday as much Officer hand delivers marijuana It was just another day for County Officer Phil Barney. He was driving down the road and passed a car that was weaving in his lane. As officer Barney walked up past the car to visit with the driver he smelled what seemed to be a strong odor of marijuana. He asked to see the drivers license and registration and was told it was a rental car and therefore produced the rental agreements. Barney noticed that the name on the rental agreement and the license were not the same and the driver explained that he was on his way to Veil Colorado to meet his boss with some video equipment The bosses wife had made and signed the rental agreement. Officer Barney then asked the driver about the smell of marijuana in the car and if he had any firearms. The driver denied both. He then asked if he could look in the car and Barney was given permission when he checked out a tupperware dish under the seat containing a small amount of marijuana. There was a large suitcase on Rachel Mason Angie Nielsen -- - to Detroit the back seat along with three other suitcases in the trunk. In one of the unlocked suitcases Barney found two, five pound bags of marijuana which was enough evidence to take the individual to the county jail in Richfield. A warrant for the three large locked suitcases was obtained and 188 pounds of marijuana was accounted for. At this point the subject was asked if he were interested in turning states evidence and agreed to continue to take the illegal drug on to his final destination of Detroit. B ecause a day had been lost it was decided that Barney and the subject would fly to Detroit and pick up a like car and continue on with the delivery of the drug. Now that was an experience flying to Detroit with 188 pounds of Marijuana and firearms in a time when airport personnel are a little jumpy, said Barney. After arriving in Detroit a car was picked up, other federal agents joined and the contact was made with the buyer of the marijuana. The rendezvous was a hotel where two people showed up but begged some time as they had not put all the money together yet. The time was set for the next morning. The next morning the four suitcases were put into a Lincoln Continental where they followed him to another motel. He stayed in the motel for about four hours before he left and met another car in a grocery store parking lot and two of the suitcases were put into another car. At this point both cars were then followed in different directions and both pursuits finished with high speed chases before arrests were made. Barney explained that a high speed chases in Detroit are a lot different than high speed chases in the Sevier Valley. There are a lot more cars, he said. Barney felt good about the effort of the departments involved and the success of arresting at least a couple of the buyers responsible for the distribution of illegal drugs. He explained that one of the other males arrested was willing to take law enforcement officers to the place receiving the drug across the border from Mexico in California so there may even be more arrests made before the case is closed. as possible. A suggestion is that the teams alternate weeks as to who Format of plays on Saturdays. should be left tournaments region to the regions, but both the region and state tournaments should be scheduled at the same time and at the same site. Two locations at the site would be utilized, for example: the front sides of state basketball tournaments should be held at the Centrum at SUSU, while the back sides of the schedule could be held at Cedar City High. Wresting. Duel meets should not impact the school week Monday through Thursday more -- than one time a week. 2A schools should not schedule 16 team tournaments as they seriously impact Friday instructional time. 2A wrestling tournaments within the season should only be scheduled on Saturdays. All post season tournaments should be held on Saturdays for Region, and Friday and Saturday for Stale. Volleyball. Should be scheduled on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. Post season should be held Friday nights and Saturday unless the tournament comes on the opening day of the deer hunt. Continued on Page 2 Ross Marshall resigns from Board J.
