Show :3 MET August 1. 1990- - Requirements for teacher success Dr. Robert Moss An effective schools research study found that the qualify of instructional personnel was much more important to student learning than the quality or availability of equipment, facilities, textbooks, or supplies. The research findings focused on the importance of classroom teachers, teacher characteristics, behaviors, and understanding is important to effective teaching. These are the things they found: Effective teachers have high verbal and conceptual ability. The teacher was able to be resourceful, flexible, supportive and able to help the children define and explore problems. Effective teachers are concerned about upgrading professional skills. Effective teachers have knowledge of what they are teaching. Students learned best what their teachers emphasized most - and what their teachers were best at teaching. Effective teachers understand what learning involves. They taught objectives at appropriate levels of difficulty, checked on the students skills more often before going on to new levels of learning; provided prompt feedback; were good at motivating their students to learn; and paid greater attention to the length and spacing of practice. Effective teachers understand the characteristics of their students. They can see limited attention span. They adapt their instruction to the level of the student Effective teachers spend more Fremont Park workshop on Hopi Dolls & Atlatals Fremont Indian State Park and Central Utah Archaeological Society are jointly sponsoring a primitive technology workshop on Making Hopi Kachina Dolls and Atlatl Making. The Hopi Kachina Workshop will be held August 18, at 10 a.m. Instructor will be Mark Ault, professional wood carver and sculptor from Fayette, Utah. Participants will be shown how to carve and paint Hopi Kachina Dolls. Come prepared to sit under the shade of a tree all day and create your own doll, under Mr. Aults direction. Cost for the workshop sill be $18. Bring your own tools if you have them. The Atlatl making workshop will be held September 8, at 10 a.m. It will teach how to make and use a 1. Father of the year gling. Nominations for Single Mother and Single Father of the Year can be made by anyone, but must include a statement from at least one of the nominees children on how their parent influenced their lives and made living in a single parent home a good experience. If children are small, a statement from a close friend or relative may be substituted. Other information will include accomplishments in their careers, education, home life, and community as well as barriers they overcame to achieve these accomplishments. The Outstanding Single Mother and Single Father of the year should demonstrate dedication, determination, and strength and be an inspiration to other single parents to strive for success. Winners will be announced at the 3rd Annual Single Family Convention which will be held in Moab.Sept. 15, 16. While winners do not need to be present to receive their award, they may do so at no cost and will be provided complimentary motel accommodations. Man calls for educators to teach core values The man who gave America Archie Bunker wants eduators to teach religion to students. Norman Lear, award winning producer of TVs All in the Famiy told a National Education Associa-toin- s Assemgly that in teaching we must not step on religion, each others faiths. However he deplored what he called the loss of faith in leaders and institutions. Our culture celebrates the material things and largelly ignores the spiritiual things, Lear added He expresssed regret about never speaking of God or morality with his children at the dinner table. The study noted that the ratio of active teaching time to student seatwork was almost 2 to 1 in high achieving schools, with 1 to 2 in low achieving schools. Effective teachers assign less busy work (seatwork). Pupils were seen more often participating in an active part of learning. , Effective teachers generate more learning activities. For example, team games were used effectively as an instructional aid. Effective teachers are absent less from school. The more teachers were absent, the less students learned, according to the study. Lower achieving schools had higher percentages of teacher absences, and were more likely to report excessive teacher turnover. Japanese Exchange students in Sevier County Jacoy Crane named to Three Japanese Exchange students arrived in Sevier County on July 25 for a three week stay with their host families. Who's Who Jacoy Crane, Salina, has been nominated to Whos Who Among American High School Students an honor reserved for only 5 of the nations high school students each year. Jacoy is now eligible to compete for $65,000 in college scholarships. More than $1,100,000 has been awarded through this program. The students, age 15 - 17 will arrive in the United States this August and will attend a local high school, and return to their home countries in June of 1991. The students, all fluent in English, have been screened by their school representatives in their home countries, and have spending money and medical insurance. Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Martin, Aurora, has been named to Whos Who Among American High School cultural Program is a two-wa- y exchange with the goal of promoting international understanding and giving youth an opportunity to be better informed about another culture. Jill Bayles is the Sevier County coordinator for the program. While here the youth will participate in a ride on the Heber Creeper, pioneer games, leather crafts, shopping, and an hour at Temple Square. They will be treated as a member of their host families. Fremont Indian State Park will host its 3rd birthday celebration Saturday, August 11. The park will have a full day of activities including guided walks and canyon tours led by park rangers, museum tours and video presentations. Tushar Mountain Village will host Arrowhead making demonstrations, horseshoe throwing, and a variety of other fun and educa tional activities. The Tushar Mt. Dancers, who have performed throughout the Intermountain states will perform at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. They will also be offering buggy, rides and food concessions including Indian Tacos at 12:30 p.m. and dutch oven dinners - by reservation 4 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to come and help celebrate the parks 527-338- -- SEVIER VALLEY HOSPITAL CLINICS SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST Asbestos being removed from Utah schools Asbestos will be removed from Delta High School and the school will be ready for school bells August 22, according to Keith Griffiths Millard School District Business Administrator. The asbestos removal project contracted to an Ogden company, should be completed by August 3. Subcontractors will then reinstall insulation, lights, floor coverings and ceilings. If for some reason the project is not completed - the opening of school may have to be delayed. Asbestos is being removed from schools due to health concerns.
