Show tench Up 14.-199- Mayor's Corner . & Dear Editor Pesticides are found wells in Sevier County in Environmental Protection Agency says that in general there should be concern when pesticide levels begin to exceed 3 parts per billion. The traces of chemicals in the well water includes such pesticides as Atrazine, Dicamba, Cyanazine, Chloipyrifos and Prometon. The well testing plan was introduced late last year due to the fact that more than 60 percent of all Utahns get their drinking water from groundwater supplies. The sampling takes place in the High Risk Areas in Washington, Iron, Beaver, Sevier, Millard, Sanpete, Juab, Utah, Duchesne, Uintah, Davis, Morgan, Weber and Cache counties. In areas where pesticides are found, additional wells will be selected for an ongoing monitoring program. Central Utah Corrections Board will be set up cuss improvements with the prison staff. Between 7 and 1 1 members will be chosen. If you are interested in applying you may contact Fred at the prison site. Issues and topics of concern will be religious programming, business and economic impacts, medical expectations, and public involvement at the prison. We want the public to become involved and to understand the facility and its purpose , said Van Der Veur. Make your home safe National Poison Prevention Week is March Its a good time to take a look around the house and make sure it is safe for your young children. This year 500,000 children are estimated to accidentally overdose on swallow something poisonous. More than 90 of those poisonings will occur at home and 62 will involve children under the age of 6. Some of the most common poisons that adults may not consider include household cleaners, laundry detergents, paint thinner, and turpentine. Medications are another common cause. Aspirin is the most common cause of accidental poisoning in children. There good precautions to help prevent accidental poisoning include: Dont take medications in your childs presence, as he or she may try to imitate you later. Dont call your medicine candy to try to get your child to take it. Many cough syrups look 18-2- 4. like soft drinks and many coated medicines look like candy. Shelve and locate medications away from food items. If you think a child has taken a poison, do not excite the child; try to remain calm. Call the Poison Control center at 1 800456-7707. Be prepared to tell the poison center the age of the victim, type of poison and amount swallowed. Be sure to call the poison center before inducing vomiting, since there are several poisons that cause -- more harm if vomited. If a doctor, hospital or poison center has told you to induce vomiting, give the victim Syrup of Ipecac. Preventing an accidental poisoning is easier and safer than dealing with an emergency. You may not be able to prevent all home mishaps, but you can make your home as safe as possible for your children and for every member of the family. 4 kilos cocaine; pickup; cash seized near Salina Two men in an El Camino pickup were stopped for a routine traffic violation last Thursday by a Sevier County Sheriffs officer, about a half mile east of the Salina overpass on Further investigation led to the arrest of the two Salt Lake City men. The increased length of class periods allows further variety of classroom activities and greater teacher contact time, especially in classes such as PE or science labs where startup and shutdown time limits the time on task. Under the present semester system, students have 7 classes each Pam Williams Sevier School District All three high schools in Sevier School District will be on trimester schedules beginning with the 1990-9- 1 school year, bringing some uniformity to the calendar, even though each school plans to manage the system differently. Trimesters are 12 weeks instead of the current 1 8, and classes day, and teachers with multiple assignments have to prepare several lessons, which requires shifting gears often during the day. With the trimester, students have five classes, and teachers often have fewer subjects to prepare for in a school day. Richfield High, which piloted the trimester schedule in 1986-8will continue it, with the only major change being the addition of several concurrent enrollment classes for juniors and seniors to earn college credit. Sevier Valley Tech, which offers applied technology courses to high school students, has also changed to the trimester system. North Sevier High School principal Larry Shum way said he plans to do some flexible scheduling to allow students a two week rotation on some classes where less credit is required for graduation. For example, a student taking band on Monday - Wednesday Friday of one week, and Tuesday and Thursday of the following week, might be in PE classes on alternate days. In the same time period it takes to earn 1.5 credits in one subject, a student might be earning .75 credits in two subjects. Scheduling will be done by computer. Even though a flexible schedule might seem hard to re- -' member initially, Mr. Shumway says any student who can recall evening television programming can surely remember what his or her next class is and where it is located. Advanced Preparation (AAP) classes and concurrent enrollment will be heavily emphasized at North ' ' ' , ranching, oil and gas, timbering . : Multiple use of public lands has served this nation well since its conception. Ninety million acres are now in wilderness, and environmental groups want another 150 million acres locked up as wilderness. If they get that, then they will want more huge blocks of land. Wilderness areas are and will be closed to everyone except hikers. No mechanized vehicles are allowed, therefore mining will not be possible because roads cant be built, and machinery will not be allowed. No one can drive there for recreation, 9 As part of becom ing a part of the everyday life in the Gunnison Valley, Warden Fred Van Der Veur is proposing the creation of a Central Utah Corrections Facility Community Advisory Board. This board would be used to establish community interest and support by discussing community opinions with corrections personnel. They will be looking for citizens to participate with a 2 year tenure who are interested in the community and are willing to dis keep our lands free useable by everyone Let's Phone News Items Utah Agriculture Commissioner Miles Cap Ferry says that new test results show minute traces of pesticides in only 9 of the 44 wells tested around the state. Sevier County wells were included in the 9 well group. After a full year of testing the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has found only minute traces of pesticides in some Utah wells. Under a contract from the Dept, of Agriculture, USGS researchers sampled 44 different wells around the state and found only minute traces of pesticides in nine well water samples from Sevier, Washington, Morgan, Beaver, Utah and Duchesne counties. The pesticide levels in the water ranged from a high of .2 parts per billion to .05 parts per billion. The Letters to the Editor Names be We welcome letters to the Editor. Multiple use of public lands makes the lands available to all. We in the West, and our ancestors have developed the west at considerable sacrifice. We built the farms, ranches, cities, mines, mills and roads, (that back packers use to get to the wilderness areas), therefore we should have the most say about how the land is used. Lets keep the land free for all the people to use and enjoy. Minor injuries are those that sideline the athlete for less than one week. The National Athlete Trainers Association which compiles statistics on high school athletes notes the following information: 35 of high school football players suffered injures in a 1988-8- 9 study. The injury rate for wrestlers was about About 23 of basketball players - both boys and girls - were - 30. injured. 70 of these injuries occurred during practice. NATA officials say that all high schools should have a certified athletic trainer. Only 16 of high schools do.
