Show 3 The Salina Sun. Wednesday. Mav 10. 1989 You and Your Child: Success in School by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President Remember Archie Bunker? He was the TV character who just couldnt bring himself to admit he was wrong. Parents cant afford that luxury. Thats because children love to catch us adults making an incorrect statement. Dad: Bart, youre going to have to study your history if you expect to be a Congressman when youre 35. Bart: Im going to be a Congressman by the time Im 32. Dad: The Impossible. Constitution says you have to be 35 years old. Bart: Wrong, dad, the Constitution says a person has to be 25 years old to be elected to the House and 30 to sit in the Senate. Youre thinking of the minimum age for President. So Dad looks it up, and Bart is correct. Gulp. Okay, theres no denying that Bart wins that little dispute. Your best move now. Dad is to own up to your mistake with good humor and allow Bart to be right First of all, Bart will be proud of himself, and thats good because every kid needs that. Second, admitting a mistake makes a father human, and every kid needs to know that Archie Bunker? He couldnt force himself to say he was sorry, either. Parents need very much to apologize when theyve perpetrated some injustice against one of the children. For instance, mom might accuse Rick of spilling grape juice on a washer load of white shirts because Rick was the only one at home. But it was Bart who spilled it just before he left for baseball practice. Love means never having to regret you re sorry. Ask anybody anybody but Archie Bunker. ' LOVE THEM ALL: North Sevier Middle School's PTA wanted to let everyone know that they think highly of the teachers and staff at NSMS.
