In many cases that may be true, but how can we help children acquire these work habits of infollo- dependence, responsibility, wing directions, and persistance? A report on recent research examining this question has been written by Shelley K. Lindauer, Ph.D., assistant professor of the department of family and human devlopment at Utah State University. Patterns of behavior begin to the pre school years. As children grow, they need a variety of opportunities to become responsible. Children feel competent when they are given opportunities to be independent and when they see that their parents feel they are dependable. Children will often perform according to expectations. If these expectations are reasonable for the childs age, the child who is expected to be dependable and responsibile will likely behave that develop in Children should be given a variety of responsibilities around the home - jobs that suit their developmental level, such as taking care of a pet, keeping toys and room picked up, or helping in some way at meal time. The expectation that your children are important, valued, and responsible members of the family will go a long way to help them develop feelings of independence and self worth. Children who become overly frustrated with tasks which are too challenging, or which they do not feel that can complete successfully, often simply will giveon up. what Parents should focus the child has completed, rather than what is left to do. If they do this, they are helping their child develop important feelings of setting goals and reaching them in positive ways. The early development of at childs feelings of independence and responsibility, and the skills of learning, following directions, and persistence are important building blocks for the later development of constructive work habits.
