Show The SunNewS Wed, March 26, 1986 '"Jet 3 Teacher to Parent Helping your child succeed Betty Condie X) President,byUtah Education Association The average elementary teacher with a class of 30 students has about 300 minutes to divide among them each day. Group activities cut that time to about six minutes a day per child in theory, In actual practice, it's difficult for a teacher to give even that bit of uninterrupted attention to each child because those with learning difficulties require so much more time. Many parents, too, have only a few minutes each day with a child. Parents who are willing to invest as little as ten minutes a day in quality time helping their child can work wonders. Here are some tips for turning those ten minutes into quality time: 1 . Set a goal for each session. It shoud be a specific skills goal such as "Learn three new Vocabulary Words." J, Chart your student's progress. Keep a list of every goal Keep it orgayou accomplish. nized, visible, and businesslike. Avoid wasting time. 3. Become success-oriente- and d keep the big picture in mind. Be positive. Vary your techniques. 4. Think of your ten minutes as a daily dose of success for your student. The secret of success in working at home with your child is to start from a point of strength and go on to wort on his or her weaknesses. If you make a habit of working together, you might build a better relationship as well as a better student. Your student will thank you and so will his teacher. Youth Orchestra Workshop Dr. Shelley Lindauer, director of child development at Utah State University notes that "Cartoons are often the worst offenders when it comes to violence. Some studies have found that there is six times more violence in cartoons than in adult shows, she says. She notes that young children often use the term blow someone away when they are asked how to solve a dispute with another child. She says when a policeman visited a campus preschool, the first thing the children wanted to see was his gun. Lindauer does not advocate keeping children away from guns altogether. Since children are surrounded by so much violence you should try to use war toys with supervision, she noted. Parents especially need to discuss the consequences of real violence. Kids need to know that when people are blown away, they dont come back to life in the next episode.
