Show 2 T. The Safina Sun Wed ; MIMA . March 12, 1986 SUN A Pocketbooks from all over seem to be tighter now than ever before and it seems to be affecting everyone. Even governments and school districts are crying There just doesn't seem to be enough to go around A couple of weeks ago Sevier School District made a hurry-upurchaseof a mini school van. After bids were accepted it was decided by internal staff that a 1986 model van would be purchased from a Salt Lake dealer. After the bids were researched I am not so sure they made what could have p been the best purchase with the taxpayers of this county in mind. It was later found out that a brand new 1985 van, which would have been brought up to specifications with some minor alterations, was bid out at $700 less than the one the district purchased. The lower bid had been submitted by a local dealer, Tom John Chevrolet. District buying personnel said they felt that the 1986 van was the better buy over the 1 985 van because of the resale value down the road. Since when does a school district buy a vehicle for resale value? I feel that the district would have received the same number of miles out of a new 1985 van as it would have received from a new 1 986 van. And at the end Traveler is Council seeks funding from Impact Board Bargain? Or Was It? upset ! of its usable life with the district, both bans would be worth almost the same amount. A van with lots of miles and student wear and tear will not be worth a whole lot of money in the end, I feel bad when elected officials and buying agents for the government do not better understand the importance of buying at home, especially when it saves you money. I realize that sometimes it is harder for local businesses to compete with large volume buyers on the Wasatch Front, but when they go to the effort to not only find the product that meets bid specifications, and then beat the price by $700. and still they do not get the sale - something is wrong! Spending tax money wisely is the name of the game. We appreciate those who are careful, but to us on this side of the county that same $700 could have gone a long ways toward the completion of our football field at the high school. The same facility that wasn't completed when the high school was finished because funds weren't available. The same project that is still not completed due to limited funds. The next time you have a little extra money to spend, please let us on the north end of the county know about it. We can use itl Letters to the Editor are encour aged and welcome. Iam writing this to inform all our friends, here in this wonderful community, that among us there is someone that takes advantage of travelers and fellow citizens as well. The following is a recap of events following an arrest and release from the Richfield County Jail. On March 4, 1966 after filling up with gas and drinking two beers, I and one passenger proceeded through Salina and east on hterstate 70. About 10 miles up the canyon an officer of the Utah Highway Patrol stopped me because of failing to have my California licenses registered up to date. (Please note: in the state of California, until March 30, there is an amnesty of licensing automobiles.) After the officer and I spoke momentarily to each other, he smelled beer on my breath and asked how much I had to drink. I replied, "Two beers sir. ..within the last hour. He then told me he had to arrest me for possible D.U.I (Driving under influence). I then asked the officer if I could walk the straight line. He replied, "No, lhave to give you a breath analysis. In fact, the legislature was only concerned with the state becoming involved with the railroad long enough to find a capable buyer and then recouping the money it took to buy the line from D&RG. Short line railroads are in demand these days, and railroad promoters feel that a short line that would be constructed between Levan and Gunnison and then refurbishing the railroad tracks between Richfield and Moroni would be a profitable service to invest in.
