Following are the prairie schooners of the early gold woker and of the pioneer and the handcarts of the L. D. S. Immigrants. The rider of the pony express with buckskin garments and saddle bags is shown, and then comes one of the old overland route stages, followed by a motley collection of buggies, wagons, surreys, freighting outfits, borax wagons and along with them the prospectors outfits. The automobile arrives and among the pioneers is shown an old machine of a type long extinct Tills Is contrasted with the modern cars, the big busses, luxurious limousines and heavy trucks which created the demand for through highways such as that between Ely and Wendover, completion of which is the cause of the celebration. The Lincoln Highway from Wendover to Ely covers a distance of 119 miles and has been traveled by automobiles since its completion at a rate of a mile a minute, In sharp contrast to the time the pioneer required to traverse the same distance brings a realization of the difference in travel now and when the west was young. A feature in entertaining visitors to the Ely celebration, was a trip to Ruth, Nevada, 14 miles away where the processes of taking mountains down with steam shovels as exempli iupi three-cylind- er fied at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Is re vvned. Rlshel, manager of the Utah State Automobile association, on arrival, 6a id that the jaunt from Salt to Ely is now about a seven-hotrip with ordinary driving. Of course, said Mr. Rlshel, some will make it, as some have, in less than five hours. And so far as the road goes, there is no reason why that rate cannot be attained. In other words, the character of the roadway is no longer the determining factor of the Fieed at which the trip is made. Probably the best part of the road, right now, Is that between Wendover and Ely. It is. of course, newer than the section in Utah. It is a wonderful road for mile after mile straight as an arrow and with curves of the widest and easiest so that it Is not necessary to reduce any reasonable speed while making them.
