Show THE SAUNA SUN, SAUNA, UTAH Builds Miniature Rail Line on Country Estate Y. Cecil Gage, retired broker, of FIshkill, N. Y has Just completed a miniature railway system, which he has constructed with his own hands entirely from odds and ends found lying about his estate. The tracks and switches were made from the floor beams and the cars and locomotive from the partitions of dismantled farm buildings. Ashes from the family furnace served as ballast for the tracks. A gasoline motor to run the locomotive and wheels for locomotive and cars are ttie only parts of the system that are not homemade. Mr. Gage began constructing his little road five years ago In order to supply himself with an easy way of disposing of ashes. He has been steadily adding to it since then until now he has two miles of track, five passenger cars, two flat cars, a freight car, eight switches, four crossings equipped with warning signs, a turn; table, a snowplow and half a dozen stations. At night and during severe weather a long chicken house serves as a "roundhouse for the protection of the rolling stock. The road is used to carry farm products, firewood and similar materials about the estate as well as to take the children of FIshkill and the surrounding towns for joyriding. Mr. Gage estimates his yearly mileage as The tiny something above 10,000. cars attain a speed of 20 miles an hour or more on straight runs, and, alseveral thousand persons though have been carried as passengers, there never has been an accident. Popular Science. two-mil- e Drinking Toast Dates Back, to Pagan Times Just as nutmeg, spices and so on are still sometimes put into such a drink ns "punch," so In the olden days a common custom was to slip a mite of toasted bread into a glass of ale with the idea that the taste was thereby Improved. And so it came about that a drink was called a toast. The custom of drinking to someone really dates from the old pagan days when sacrifices used to be made to the gods. Later on an offering of wine was made instead, its red color typifying the actual blood of the real sacrifice. Later still men made their offerings not to the gods but in honor of a friend. So our ancestors would drink a glass or toast in honor of someone, and the person honored was as often as not called a toast for short. This is supported by the fact that William Strickland, who accompanied Cabot on several of his voyages, adopted a turkey rampant as his crest on being granted arms in 1551. Exactly how the turkey got his name is a mystery. Some authorities suggest that the bird christened Itself by constant reiteration of a sound that resembles The birds succulent meat was so highly esteemed by Sixteenth century s churchmen, that by Archbishop order, only one dish of turkey cocks was permitted at feasts and banquets. Never now can I believe it What you make other people suffer is material for your own success, and you delight in it. TYou make notes upon it. Pierre was mad through loving me, too Ignorantly, too jealously, but what you did to me was through loving me too little. That was a brand upon my brain and soul. Sometimes since then that scar on my shoulder has seemed to me almost like the memory of a caress. I went away from Pierre, leaving him for dead, ready for death myself. When you left me, you left me alive and ready for what sort of living? It has been Pierre's love and hls following after me that have kept me from low and beastly things. Ive run from him, but Ive run clean and free. She began to tremble. Will you say anything more to me and to my man? Prospers face wore its old look of the winged demon, ne was cold In his angry pain. "Just one thing to your man, perhaps, if you will allow me, but perhaps youll tell him that yourself. That hls method is the right one, I admit. But in one respect not even a brand will altogether preserve property rights. Morena could say something on that score, no could I. , . Hush!" said Joan; I will tell him myself. Pierre, I left you for dead and I went away with this man, and after a while, because I thought you were dead, and because I was alone and sorrowful and weak, and because, perhaps, of what my mother was, I I " She fell away from Pierre, crouched against the side of the door, and wrapped the curthln round her face. He told me you were dead " The words came muffled. Pierre had let her go and turned to Prosper. Hls own face was a mask of rage. Prosper knew that It was the Westerners Intention to kill. For a minute, no longer, he was a lightning channel of death. But Pierre, the Pierre shaped during the last four difficult years, turned upon his own writhing, savage soul and forced it to submit. It was as though he fought with his hands. Sweat broke out on him. At last, he 6tood and looked at Prosper with sane, stern eyes. If thats true what you hinted, If thats true what she wfs tryln to tell, if its even partly true, he said painfully, "then It was me that brought It upon her, not you a a not herself, but me." He turned back to Joan, drew the curtain from her face, drew down her hands, lifted her and carried her to the couch beside the ire. There she shrank away from him, tried to push him back. Its true, Pierre; not that about Morena, but the rest is true. Its true. Only he told me you were dead. But you' werent no, dont take ray hands. I never did have dealings with Holllwell. Indeed, I loved only you. But you must have known me better than I knew myself. For I am bad. I am bad. I left you for dead and I went away." He had mastered her hands, both of them In one of his, and he drew them close to his heart. Dont Joan! Hush, Jonn! You mustnt. It was my doings, gel, all of it. nush! He bent and crushed hls lips against hers, silencing her. Then she gave way and clung to him, sobbing. After a while Pierre looked up at Prosper Gael. All the patience and the hunger and the beauty of his love possessed hls face. There was simply no room in his heart for any lesser thing. Stranger, he said In the grave and gentle western speech, Ill have to ask you to leave me with my wife. Prosper made a curious, silent gesture of and went out, feeling hls way before him. It was half an hour later when the doctor came softly to the door and held back the curtain In his hand. He did not say anything and, after a silent minute, he let fall the curtain and moved softly away. He was reassured as to the success of hls experiment. He had seen Joans face. THE END self-despa- Will Not Laugh in Captivity. Some of us who have been fortunate enough to get a glimpse of a properly stocked zoological garden have seen the laughing Jackass, and with one accord we have all wondered why lie is so culled. In captivity lie does not laugh, nor even smile, and there is little or no resemblunce, tiiat we can trace, to our friend the Jackass. The fact Is that he is found in Australia und he laughs at hls best only when at liberty in his habitat, and then he. laughs vociferously in the morning and evening. Ills laugh Is a loud, raucous noise, much like a mocking laugh, but hideous in the extreme. A family of these birds happening to locate near ones home will pretty nigt drive the humans to desperation. They are extremely curious and will spend hours watching humans at worn. They are also attracted by the music of a church and will haunt such localities during service, every once In a while lending their aid with their terrlflf laugh.
