Dr. II. E. Gregory, director of the Bishop museum and chairman of the conference, was Intrusted with the work of securing a government ship for the exploration, and he finally aroused the Interest of the Washington officials In the little-know-n islands forming a part of the Hawaiian group but extending In a chain far to the northwest of the main Hawaiian islands. Exterminate Rabbits. The mine sweeper Tanager, for some fftne attached to the Honolulu naval Station, was assigned to the work, with Lieut. Commander S. W. King In general charge and heading the surveying parties, and Dr. Alexander Wetmore of the biological bureau of the Department of Agriculture of Washington In charge of the scientific features. The scientists carried out their work In the several fields of Investigation in four monthly divisions. The first cruise was to Laysan island, Pearl and Hermes reef, Midway and Ocean Islands. The second Included these Islands and also took In French Frigate shoals. In the party was L. A. Thurston, the veteran editor of the Honolulu Advertiser, who had as one of his objects the Increasing of his notable collection of shells, numbering moie than 90,000, of both ocean and land varieties. The third cruise embraced Necker Island and Nihoa or Bird island French Frigate shoals, and an attempt was made to land on Kaula. For t'ne fourth cruise the scientists used the mine sweeper Whippoorwill, with on nlrplane and two destroyer convoys. They left Honolulu on July 7 and were Joined later by the Tanneer, which left Honolulu July 16 to close the exploration. On Laysan island the scientists fotinct It necessary to exterminate hordes of rnbbits which had actually denuded the island of vegetation. Thev then planted various trees, shrubs, vines and grasses taken there for the purpose. They also had to kill off the rabbits at Pearl and Hermes reef. On this second cruise special study of marine zoology was made in the shoals and reefs. Stone Idols Found on Isle. When the explorers visited Bird and Necker islands on the third cruise they found 15 species of birds and conducted their scientific Investigations as extensively ns they could In view of interference by the myriad feathered population and in spite of molestation by fish. They found evidence of human habitation at some remote period on both of these volcanic isiets. They discovered stone Idols, bowls and other Implements on Necker, and there were also several stone terraces and plat- d few live land shells. The geologists In the various expeditions found on interesting study In Bird Island, the largest and most important of the northwestern chain. One sldeof the Island rises perpendicularly 903 feet above the ocean. The explorers found many caves, one extending entirely through the Island. Immense flocks of birds encountered were indifferent to their npproach. The coast waters abounded In sharks, turtles and game fish. On the cruise to French Frigate shoals the scientists mapped a dozen smnll sand islets within the crescent-shape- d reef and made a landing on a small pinnacle 120 feet high. They spent ten days on Johnston island, a stretch of sand more than half a mile long, where they found fish and marine life abundant. They noted only three kinds of plants. The naval aviators, from an elevation of 3,000 feet, photographed two small islands and adjacent reefs. The expedition to Wake island, lying 2,000 miles west of Honolulu, spent nine days there. Wake differed from the other islands In being thickly covered with plants, some of which were almost small trees. In addition to the usual Pacific sea birds, they found a wingless rail. The cruise was shortened by the fact that there was no fresh water on either Johnston or Wake Island. When the Tanager returned on August 13 the scientists had completed their survey of all the islands on the Bird reservation except Palmyra and Kingmans reef. First Auto Made in Kentucky Town Horseless Carriage Was Exhibited in 1859. Augusta, Ky. That the first automobile was made in this little town in Bracken county, Kentucky, In 1859, by Andrew J. Reese, long ago dead, has just become known, through statements made by Alex Reese of this town, son of the maker. Reese has told all about the first horseless carriage," how It was made, how It looked and the consternation It created In the bosoms of the simple country folk of that era. Reese declared his father made virtually all of the strange craft, with the exception that William Uroswell, a blacksmith, and John Jones, a gunsmith, assisted In making some of the minor ports. While Augusta was, therefore, the home of the automobile, the manufacturer never got a patent on his vehicle and gradually all memories In the public mind of the machine were lost until a visitor who beard rumors of the vehicle requested particulars from the surviving Mr. Reese. Constructed Like Buggy. ' Alex Reese said the automobile was built on the order of the running gear of the buggy, and was ubout ten feet The wheels were on the order long. Hydrophobia Germ Is Isolated of buggy wheels and about ten feet bigh. The vehicle was covered with boards, making a platform on which four or, five persons could ride, with room for a driver. The boiler, about three and a half or four feet long, ten to twelve inches in diameter, was set In the middle of the machine, but Mr. Reese Is not sure whether or not the car was propelled by one or two small engines. The horseless carriage was built nt the Reese shop on East Fourth street, and while It was being constructed many people, Mr. Reese says, came from all sections of the country to see the strange craft. After the machine was completed, Mr. Reese says, it was equipped with a brass whistle. It was guided by a wheel resembling the pilots wheel on n ferry boat, and, accompanied by his admiring friends, Reese would drive all about town and down to the river front. The whistle from the first automobile was always answered by a toot from the great river steamers. Exhibited at Fair. Alex Reese says he does not remember the exact speed of the strange machine, but said that It could travel considerably faster than a man conbl walk. He also says the car was taken to the Germantown air, then a noted place of resort of people from over the Middle West, and that It was not driven there, but carried on a wagon, so that horses met along the way would not become frightened at she apparition of a machine moving along the highway with no visible means of propulsion. Later the "horseless carriage was exhibited at the fair, being placed lh a large tent, and ten cents admission was charged for Inspection of the vehicle. It is claimed that the Reese vehicle was the first steam-drivecontrivance to travel roads In Kentucky for many years, long preceding steart wheat threshers. Machine Built in 1859. n Reese, Sr., started work on the automobile In 1859. After the novelty of the machine had worn off, Reese sold the engines and other machinery to the late Cnpt. W. L. Thomas of Boudes Ferry, who bought 11 with the intention of putting the engines on a boat to be used for ferry it Is stated on apparently purposes, good authority that these engines an-Ian attic at the Thomas home at Boudes Ferv.
