Show Volume 5 SAUNA, UTAH, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1922 I'M lion n Tictims of fell Seiier Valley Water On the Road of Good Intentions 01 S The entire population of the Gunnison Valley was shocked Wednesday morning when the news was spread that Mrs. Dora Harlow and Florence Beck, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Beck of Centerfield, had been instantly killed in a railroal accident at Clearfield, Utah, the home of Mrs. Barlow. The news was not received until nearly midnight Tuesday and according to the message ath to the message the accident which caused the death happened at about 4:30 Tuesday afte rnoon. Not alone did Mrs. Barlow and Florence Beck meet instant death, but Grant Steed, infant, and his mother, Mrs. Walter W. Steed, Jr., were killed and the children of Mrs. Barlow, David Barlow and Haven Jesse Bar-loand Harold Steed, infant, are confined at the Dee hospital at Ogden suffering from severe burises. The horrible accident happened when the automoblie in which the seven passengers were riding was run down by a northbound Denver & Rio Grande Western train, running from Denver to Ogden. Mrs. Steed was driving the car and was proceeding north from the Barlow' home to the Clearfield State Bank, where Mr. Steed is employed as cashier, and Mr. Barlow as assistant cashier. The automobile in which the seven passengers were riding was a small sedan and according to eye witnesses the machine was about the center of the famed llumply Dumpty, health clown, delightfully entertained the students of all the schools of Salina yesterday morning at the Kinema theater. And it was a rare treat. Ray L. In his lectures he instills mirth and reaches the hearts of a!l his listeners to such a degree that his work is resulting in a wonderful lot of good. Law teaches eight basic principles of health, illustrating each by some graphic drollery. His precepts are as folow's 1. : Brush your teeth up and dowm The available water of Seviei Valley is entirely inadequate to irrigate all the land which is now included in irrigation pi ejects. This is the conclusion of BiolVssors O. . W Israeksen and L. M. Winsor of the Utah Agricultural College, as stated in Bulk tin No. 182 Net Duty ol Water in Sevier Valley which has just been published by the Utah Ag ricultural Experiment Station. This bulletin contains the results of seven years experiments on the most economical use of water for the more common crops on typical soils in Sevier Valley, sugar beets, potatoes, and alfalfa ha ing been given major consideration. It gives in a detailed and interesting way the different methods which were employed each year in the irrigation of the various-cropsshowing the results in every case. Farmers who have difficulty with, their sugar beets on account of the soil being so dry that the rainfall must be depended upon to bring the seeds up, will find a great deal of valuable information in this bulletin on irrigating before the seed is planted, or, as it is called, irrigating the crop up. This method has proved to be of great value in some cases, but, as it is pointed out, a complete knowledge of the nature of the soil is necessary in order to work in, and arour.d. This opinion is based on the high education rating given Utah as compared with other states in every classification thus far made. The school of education at the university now has a total registration of 700, according to Dean Bennion. This is the largest, registration ever attained by any school at the university and is an increase over tha. enrollment of last year. This all indicates, said Dean. -- HeaoJpp, that there is no longer any excuse for hirning teach ers who have had no special training and who are not certified. The new situation, however, should not be an excuse for lowering the salaries but raising the requiriements. The training school at the university is. running at full capacity, with additional supervision and several new teachers. There are sixty women of the school of education who are teaching in the city schools. The training school at present is better equipped than it has been since the war, according to Doan SEAGULL GIRLS ON HIKE The Seagull girls of the Primary association took a hike last Friday night. After a long ramble over the foot hills and stone quarry, the party participated in a weinie roast at Rocky Cove. Mesdames R. W. McAllister and George Crane acted as chaperons to the following girls: Misses Fearl Jensen, Ada Crane, Ara Peterson, Lueile Bird, Bessie Crane, Ethel McDonald, Shirley Wright, Faun Bench, Sadonia Jensen and Artis Burr. telligently. A great many irrigators do not know just how much water can be applied to the land before it begins to percolate so deeply that the excessive amounts are wasted. Considerable space is given to a valuable discussion of this problem. The experimental work suggests that, on the type of soil studied, 27 to 33 inches of water applied in four or five irrigations will insure economical returns for sugar beets, 21 to 27 inches, and 30 to 36 inches for alfalfa, uniformly dis- With an enrollment of eighteen on the opening day and an addition of three new students since,' tbfe kindergarten of Salina starts out fnost encouragingly. As she expresses it, she is doing the work for he joy in seeing the little tots develop and for helping to care for the little buds from Gods garden.
