Show TH PAGE 6 deer the checking The first two successful hunters through station in Salina Canyon, on the opening day,- October 17th, were Jack Loftus, a former Salina resident, now of Maywood, and Robert Crosier, Illinois, Dwight Salina Crosier was also tagging along with the successful hunters, but Jack was reported skunked. checked in a 4 pointer, and Robert a large spike. Dwight is Roberts father, and it seems the young man should be giving his dad a few instructions on the fine art of buck shooting. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones, so this will have to be the end of this particular report. - Was up hunting Sunday, along with a few thousand other deer seekers, and as the day came near to an end, we decided to cross over from the Rex Re- didnt shoot servoir road, into the Sweet Creek area, and then down Loss Creek, hunting the road on the way down. We neared Carters Ranch at just dark, and ran smack-da- b into a checking station blockade, under the capable supervision of Wardens Voyle Hanehett and Bill Sorensen, and they were busy. For years, deer hunters have been coming down this way to avoid the checking station in Salina Canyon and the use of their deer tags. Of course, not all the hunters came down Loss Creek to avoid the check-in- , but a lot of them from the number did, probably of tags that were not attached to the deer and the tickets the wardens wrote out to the defenders. Judge E. J. Freece was the busy man, and took in plenty of sheckles from the guilty parties. Some were good sports, and realized they were in the wrong, while others were a little sore at getting caught. A check in this area has been needed for a long time, but am I glad I Plenty of deer stories are out now, but we heard one Monday night that makes a person wonder. Seems Dail Prows had gone into the canyon late in the afternoon with his family to try and bag a buck. Just above the cattle guards, a deer crossed in front of the car, and stopped in the willows nearby. The hunter took a good look and decided it was a doe. At the same time, Whitney Christensen and Milo Bosshardt of Redmond, came down the canyon. Dail told them there was a doe if they wanted it, and pointed the animal out. The Redmond hunters took careful aim and dropped the deer with a shot in the head. Went down and cleaned out a buck and were on nice their way home. Dail was still looking for a buck the last we heard, but I think it would be a good idea if he took Whitney and Milo along to identify it. After all, they cant all have a cedar tree on top of their heads. a deer that day. Weve had our fun, now lets get serious. Reed Hansen, local merchant, bagged a buck with 12 points on one side and 11 on the other. Conrad Nielsen got one with a spread. Bud Shepherd got one of the largest deer brought off the mountain, weighing well over 200 pounds. It is reported that Wardens Voyle Hanehett and Bill Sorenson surprised some hunters by throwing a blockade in Loss Creek one day. We are wondering how Wayne Peterson, local merchant, explains those three doe heads seen on his lawn. Then we have the story of the local hunter who reported he got a large two on each side. Farrell Nielsen wonders what kind of shells he was shooting when he emptied his gun at a large buck going up the hill fifty yards from him. Jack Learning reports that he surely did a nice job of cleaning his deer this year. 2 (Signed) Kills First Mr. and Mrs. S. W.
