WITHOUT PROFIT . , . Just as surely as a coyote will slit the throat of a calf or a lamb, many proposals being made in farm policy will cut profit right today out of farmers operations. And without profit, American farm production will decline and die. Profit is the oil and grease that lubricates the machinery of the free enterprise American system. J. Phil Campbell Undersecretary of Agriculture Warning Given On Baby Food Findings of Enamel Chips in Jars is Also Reported Parents should minimize the use of baby foods containing modified starches, many of which have never been fully tested for their long-ter- effects, says Consumer Reports, following tests of 39 foods from the three major manufacturers. Enamel paint chips broken off from the undersides of jar lids were found in some of the baby foods, adds a September-issu- e article in the magazine, which is published by the Consumers Union. It names Beech-Nu- t Beef with Vegetables and Cereal the worst offender and Beech-Nu- t Beef and Beef Chicken and Broth, Beech-Nu- t Chicken Broth, Gerber Chicken and Chicken Broth, Gerber Vegetables and Chicken Dinner and Heinz Beef with Vegetables High-MeDinner. Modified starches are listed on the labels of many baby food non-prof- it - - dinners, fruit and custard desserts and creamed vegetables. Their pridinners, high-me- mary purpose is to make the food less watery and prevent the ingredients from separating, Consumer Reports says. While the National Academy of Sciences declared modified starches in use before 1970 for baby suitable and safe foods, new versions have since been introduced without being fully tested, Consumer Reports explains. The National Academy of Sciences had warned that newly developed modified starches should not be used without careful testing. Insects, insect parts or rodent hairs were also found in about 25 percent of the foods tested. The foods with filth included: Beech-Nu- t Peas, Beech-Nu- t Chicken and Chicken Broth, Gerber Vegetables and Beef Dinner, Beech-Nu- t Turkey and Rice with Vegetables Dinner, Gerber Bananas with Tapioca, Beech-Nu- t Applesauce, Gerber Applesauce, Heinz Applesauce, Heinz Orange Juice, and Heinz ReApple Juice. Consumer ports 1972 tests of baby foods turned up filth in 10 percent of the samples tested. Although the rodent and insect filth is not a health hazard, the FDA should take action to eliminate both the filth and the paint chips, Consumer Reports declares. The sodium content of some of the baby foods was found to be considerably lower in the 1975 tests than in the 1972 tests, but salt should probably not be added at all, Consumer Reports says. It notes that a high salt intake may predispose infants to hypertension as adults. Many baby foods also contain sugar which is high in calories, has no other nutritional value and can lead to tooth decay even in babies, Consumer Reports says. Baby foods made at home in the blender are more nutritious than the commercial variety, Consumer Reports concludes.
