Keith Barrett was Fire Chief and Chad Beach as Assistant Chief. Jim Burr will be 1st Captain, King Anderson, 2nd Captain, and Robin Mickelson will serve as Secretary Treasurer. There are now 19 volunteer firemen serving in the Salina Fire Department. March 21st, in the Redmond Ward. Three Robert Johnson. Kelly is from the Redmond Ward and was presented his award from Scoutmaster Ronald Bosshardt. Ferrin and Douglas are from the Salina Third Ward and were presented their awards by Scoutmaster Robert Johnson. boys were honored and received their F.agle Scout awards. They were Ferrin Sttriger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Steiger; Kelly Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kent Johnson; and Douglas Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. his City post. Mr. Johnson stated that his real estate and cattle interests have become more and more demanding of his time, and he felt in order to do justice to them, he would have to resign his City office. Mr. Johnson will be opening his own real estate office in Salina and will be Branch Manager for Utah Properties, Inc., whose home offices are located in Cedar City. Mr. Johnson will be dealing in ranch, farm, and recreation properties throughout Southern Utah. He will also be handling all of the sales of Accord Lake recreational area, which includes some 500 parcels of recreational property. In addition, Mr. Johnson will be the area Boise Cascade dealer. At the present time, he is auctioneer for Richfield Auction Co. and the Uneva Livestock Auc- tion in Cedar City and plans to promote auctions in this area also. Mr. Johnson will remain with the City until late spring or early summer, or whenever a replacement can be found. A vote of thanks goes to Mr. Johnson for the exceptionally f ne job he has done for the City, 't has been through his efforts that many good programs have been effected in the area; the murals for the downtown area, work on the sewer and water improvements, a general cleanup campaign, and his work on the land fill garbage dump are just a few of the many projects he has worked on. Mr. Johnson plans to remain in Salina and will be available for consultation on any of the programs he has been involved with. . - Mi ft! t;hJ- Met Johnson North Sevier Speech Wins Region Meet, Enter State The North Sevier Speech and Forensics Department, under Aw direction of Venna Johnson, participated in the Region 7 Fdtensics Meet, held on Tuesday, March 19th. They won first .place, and the Regional Sweep-Stake- s Trophy. ' 'It was a display of talent and prat enthusiasm which enabled ' nine of the 24 NSHS contestants to win place-- , in the State Speech Tournament, to be held Friday and Saturday, March 29th and 30th, on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo. State finalists were Tammy Wasden, Orations; Kenny Poul-soDoue Christensen, Lynda Dunn, and Steve Kiefer, Legis- -' lative Forum; and Tracy Burr, Extemporaneous Speaking. Other finalists were Todd Peterson, Sorensen. The apparent low bidder w as First Seeuirty Bank, with a combined bid interest rate of 5.32 for $835,000; $500,000 for the courthouse, and $335,000 for the County's portion of the new hospital. The bonds will be repaved over a 20-ea- r period. Other bidders were Valiev Central Bank. Richfield, 5.4b percent: Continental Bank A Trust Co.. Salt Lake Citv. 5.37 percent; and Butrows & Smith, Salt Lake Cit, 5.58 percent. Plans for the new courthouse should be completed by the middle of Apt ll and bids advertised about Mav 15th. Manager To Resign We have been reluctant to announce the resignation of Met Johnson as Salina City Manager until today when, in an interview with the Sun, he made firm his decision to resign New Eagle Scouts-Douglas Johnson. Richfield City and the Sevier Commission have bids for the sale of general obligation bonds for the new Sevier County Courthouse and Sevier Valley Hospital. It was commented by one of the judges that the North Sevier Legislative Forum was the best team in competition. It was composed of Doug Christensen, Kenny Poulson, Lynda Dunn, Randy Heath, Doug Holt, Steve Kiefer, Tim Dahlsrud, Jared Sorensen, Calvin Hales, and Lane Peterson. The NSHS Extemporaneous Team included Tracy Burr, Todd Peterson, Ronnie Peterson and Tonya Utley. The Impromptu Team was composed of Jim Reynolds, Richard Curtis, Pepe Foltz, Rick Robinson and Eddie Mickelsen. The Orations Team included Tammy Wasden, Collette Peterson, Janet Lund, Cheryl Jean Jensen, Cheryl Haskins, and Gaylene Tucker. Much of the North Sevier High School team is composed of Sophomores, Freshmen and Juniors. Because of this, Region 7 will expect another fine showing from North Sevier next year. John Meleher will join Rep. Wayne Owens and other members of the Subcommittee BLM on the for hearings "Organic Act" in Richfield this Saturday. The hearings will blocus on legislation which will completely overhaul the laws now governing all public lands now under the Bureau of Land Management. "This legislation would establish for the first time the Cont. on page 5 Several members of the North Sevier Chapter FFA attended Convention the State last weekend at the Terrace Ballroom in Salt Lake. They included Rick Harvey, Brent Robins, Pat Robins, Allen Mason, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis and Nelson, Crane, Kenny Chapter Sweetheart, Stephanie Wood. Ken Nelson and Brent Robins were awarded State Farmer degrees. Rick Harvey and Pat Robins were chosen to represent the North Sevier Chapter. Pat was chosen to be a member of the banquet committee, and Rich was on the American Review Committee. Ken Nelson tried out for a State office while at the convention. He sat in the Hot Box, as it has been named in the past, to be interviewed by the nominating committee, and was elected to be State Sentinel for 74-7- On the evening of the 23rd, the Sweetheart Banquet was held. Stephanie competed with 46 other chapter sweethearts She was one of the 12 finalists on Friday, and Saturday was chosen 2nd attendant to the State FFA Sweetheart. Stephanie Wood North Sevier Jeep Posse Night Patrols Underway The week of March 18th, members of the North Sevier Sheriffs Jeep Posse began regular late night patrols on the various farm roads throughout the area. The patrols, requested by Sheriff Rex Huntsman, resulted from the theft of gas from farm implements, as well as a report of calf rustling. Similar patrols are being staged by the the Sevier Sheriffs Jeep Posse in the area from Vermillion south. North Sevier Commander Leath Rasmussen stated the patrols are in constant contact with the Sheriffs office as well as the Highway Patrol, and anyone apprehended in acts outside the law will be immediately charged. Farmers are asked to inform the Sheriff s Department of any losses, and also to take as many precautions as possible to deter farm thefts. These are the contestants for this year's Miss North Sevier Pageant, to be held April 6th at 8:00 P.M. at the North Sevier High School Auditorium. This year's theme is I Feel Pretty. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies are Randy'Johnson and Vicki Nielsen.
